Valletta is wonderful for anyone without ambulatory challenges. It offers beautiful views, both night and day, and has an incredible amount of history packed into the smallest capital city in the world. You can literally circumvent the city in a few hours on foot. The weather seemed mild for Christmas, but locals complained that it was unseasonably cold, so it must be even better in other years. We felt very safe and never pressured by street vendors or salespeople the whole time. The city buses won't pick you up if you're using a wheelchair, even though they boast the handicapped insignia in front. The drivers don't want to get behind schedule. So, don't expect hospitality out of public transportation. Theoretically, you could get anywhere around the country on the bus system. We found Taxify (Malta's equivalent to Uber) to be reliable. Stay away from the white cabs. The cost of living for Maltese citizens has shot up dramatically over the past four years, thanks to all the tax breaks for the gaming industry and the affluent Europeans that have buying up the real estate, but the Maltese don't seem too resentful and angry about that--yet. The government should consider rent control for its people, such as what New York City established for its long-term residents. Our biggest complaint the whole time pertains to the cuisine. It was very bland. Chefs who knew how to make their dishes flavorful are few and far between. The British obviously stayed too long in that regard. The restaurants in the first floor of the Falconeria Hotel and the Modern Museum of Art were nice, unexpected finds. The War Museum was better than we'd expected. We plan to come back as soon as we've saved up enough money and vacation time.
There is no where in the world where there is such history in a wonderfully preserved state. the city was built by the Knights of Malta in 1565. Many of the buildings date from that time and the 1600s. The city has been maintained and maintained beautifully. Republic Street is a great place to walk and enjoy the shops, museums, Baroque churches, cafes, and breath in the great sense of history. There is history all around you. I recommend the Malta Experience for a 45 minute video about the 6000 year history of Malta, next is the War Museum at Ft St Elmo, I highly recommend the Fortress Builders Museum on St Mark Street near the Sliema Ferry. FREE and filled with information about how the forts were designed and built. Take a walk out of the city gates and take in the walls of the city and enjoy the refurbished Triton Fountain and surrounding area. The upper Barraka gardens have a beautiful view of the Grand Harbour and the famous 3 cities across the harbor with the historic Fort St Angelo and Ft St Michael. Of course, the beautiful baroque church of St. John’s Co-Cathedral is mind blowing with its ornate beauty and history. I also recommend going to the Archeology museum on Republic Street. Finally I would approach the city with no real plans and simply walk the ancients streets as laid out in the 1560s and enjoy the steps on some streets and the old buildings. The city of Valletta is a beautiful place to walk and relax. Finally, make sure you eat a Pastizzi that you can get from Sphinx on Republic street towards Ft St Elmo and away from the center of the city. These are authentic. As of this writing 2 for 80 cents!
So much to do...had no idea. Looking forward to another visit. St John's was a great stop and so was Our Lady of tears, The Greek Theater ruins and Gorzo. We found it easy to get around on buses. There were so many great reasonably priced food options.
Awesome place! I never eat thus good in all my traveling. It is such s laidback and friendly people’s city, that you just want to stay for ever. Either language, speaking English or Italian, will make yiu to blend in and feel in heaven. This is the time to buy properties and invest in this mist wonderful gem of the Mediterranean. I loved the weather and the history and the sea but above all, I live the Maltese people: they do naje you fell at home. No regrets. Pure joy.
Fascinating place, especialy for those, who loves history. Pitoresque narrow streets, historical sights and kind people makes it some of the most charismatic places in medditerraen. Reserve at least two days. Dont forget to try traditional cuisine. Especialy recommend swimming in city right around the city - beautiful experience
Sense there was less crime and more contentment with how the society was operating than in most EU cities with comparable tourist attractions. Archeology attractions are fantastic. I will return to San Francisco convinced they could learn a lot from this small island. Like how to clean the streets and preserve historical buildings. S T H independent 85 year old traveler
