Facing the beachfront in Touho, Auberge Timay Evasion has a shared lounge and a garden. Featuring family rooms, this property also provides guests with a grill. Incredible location! Lush and tropical, woke up to the sound of hermet crabs wandering around the garden - really cool. Very relaxing vibe and Stan is an awesome host. There's a cool kava bar a short distance away. Great place to play petanque and meet some friendly locals. Merci bien Stan! A la prochaine!

Hienghene offers idyllic scenery, fantastic rock formations and great sunsets. We arrived there from the North, crossing the river via the punt ferry, which was an interesting experience. The town is very small, with few facillities outside of Koulnoue Village, but I would highly recommend leaving Noumea to drive around Le Grande Terre, to experience isolation and beautiful landscapes. There is very little traffic, and easy driving, although you would need to feel comfortable being away from it all.
Small village - not much happening. Guy in tourist office spoke little English but that was about it. Took a boat trip with a local operator - he spoke no English but thankfully had a French lady who did some translating. Nice snack bar behind the gas station slightly out of the village. Seem to like their chicken rock - have a lot of stories and animal formations to spot on the rock. Easy to spend lots of many on not much
The rock formations are incredible. There is the famous Hen and the Sphinx, but so much more if you kayak in the estuary. This side of the island is very lush and completely different from the western side. This place was the highlight of our trip to New Caledonia. You may want to stock up on a few food supplies as the resturants are scarce and not very good. There are roadside stalls selling fruit which is a bonus. We were there in lychee season. Yum! Alcohol is also very expensive in this part of the country so maybe buy some red wine before you head to this eastern destination.
Very nice place on the seeside. Splendid «flamboyant » trees in december, all the trees and plantations are very fresh and green as compared to the dry west and south of the country. The Lindéralique cliffs are very beautiful and deserve a boat-visit.
It is an interesting place to visit and use as a base for further exploration north of New Caledonia. Not much in Hienghene itself. some good camping locations nearby and interesting limestone formations and estuaries.
A must see while in New Caledonia but be prepared for below par accomodation and dining. Drive around the surrounding area including up the coast to see the cascades. Be cautious while driving because pedestrians, chickens, or dogs are frequent. Friendly locals who make you feel welcome in their communities. The rock formations are spectacular.
