Harlingen is a delightful place and a great choice from which to visit other places, if that is what you wish. The port is well worth a visit and observed from the Eetcafe by the ferry terminal as it is quite busy with all sorts of shipping passing by. Not far away is the main industrial port and the entrance to the canal system. The town itself has many interesting features apart from the many canals. If you like walking then there is much to see. A carillon is heard every half an hour and is situated in the bell tower attached to the Town Hall (Stadhuis). There is also a museum and many interesting shops. The place is very tidy and a delight to visit.
This is a port town (City in Friesland speak) which is overflowing with character. The architecture, canal system port area and general vibe are perfect. Lots of places to eat, drink and relax. Lots to do in a relatively small space. Very relaxing
Very peaceful, soothing city, exactly what you need to have some chillout after big city fuss, nice cafes with tasteful seafood, beautiful views on the North Sea with a plethora of ships and yachts under sail.
Very interesting coastal town with good history. Ferry port to the islands Interesting canals Difficult to get to by public transport. Train to Hoorn is Quite frequent from Schipol but after that you need a lift or a long bus journey
I stumbled across Harlingen by accident while looking for something to do on my free weekend during a business trip to The Netherlands. It is a beautiful town. Highlights were the Harlingen Pottery (blew my budget there) where I got a tour to see how the pottery is made. I was also fortunate enough to be there on bookstore day, so I could buy books at special prices, got free coffee and could relax in the store, taking my time to decide what to buy. The town is a great destination for lowers of seafood, harbours and you can catch the ferry to the islands here. I would love to return.
Harlingen is an historical village with very polite and friendly hospitality, Plenty of typical Dutch cozy cafes/bars/restaurants , and its easy to find your way round as everythings central and also close to the ferry services to all the local islands. We cannot recommend any particular activities as we only stayed the one night, but we did enjoy dinner at The Lachende Koe, and drinks at the Lichtboei....

I went to Harlingen for a business trip and couldn’t have been more lucky to arrive at Gerda’s Homestay. I felt welcomed right from my first knock on her door. The Homestay Harlingen really felt like home with as much familiarity as you prefer, and all the privacy you want. Also, the whole house was super clean, and so was my room and my bathroom. Luxury and comfort can totally relate to an upper scale hotel. Thank you Gerda for making my stay so special. I wish I had been able to write that in Dutch, but that’s for next time :-) Bis kaal! Anja
