Located in Ohakune at the foothills of Mt Ruapehu, Rocky Mountain Chalets Ohakune provides accommodations with free WiFi, mountain views, and access to 2 hot tubs and a sauna. We were looking for a location from which we could take several shorter day-trips on the motorcycles. Because this is a "ski town" in winter we figured it would be a good launching point. Being "off season" we were able to rent a Chalet .. the whole thing ... for the same price as a room in nearby "resort" locations. Our Chalet has a living room, dining room, full/complete kitchen and 2 bedrooms, one with a queen-bed that was quite firm and comfy. Oh, did I mention a washer and dryer and 2 packets of soap! There is a covered area for parking vehicles, which proved perfect for our motorcycles in the rain. When we arrived after normal business hours our unit was warm and ready for us, and we squared the bill and completed the checkin the next day.
With free WiFi, a tour desk and free BBQ facilities, Tongariro Suites is nestled on 2.5 acres with breathtaking mountain views. Free continental breakfast supplies are available in-room upon arrival. The staff was amazing and super nice, she even recommended us some place to visit around the place. Will recommend that place to anyone!!

The weather was not our friend on this trip to Ohakune but we did find out a lot about what we will be doing next time we go there. The town has primarily set itself up as a destination for skiers and snowboarders in the winter with the access road to the Turoa skifield starting at Ohakune. However there are heaps of summer activities to do as well with a number of cycle trails and walks on offer - all in easy reach of the town. Ohakune is flat and about 2km from end to end so everything is in easy walking distance if the weather plays nice. The number of restaurants and cafes has grown also since our last visit and many of these are open all year round. We ate at the Powderkeg restaurant because it was close to our accommodation and the food and service were both great. It does operate on a first come, first served basis so you do have to be prepared to wait at busy times. We also had breakfast at the OCR cafe and were really impressed with the range of gluten-free options available. The quality of the food was fantastic and the Atomic coffee was also excellent. We liked the look of a number of the other restaurants in Clyde St and look forward to trying them on our next visit.
It was great to get back to nature and get away from spending money! We went on two wonderful hikes- the old coach Road and Taranaki Falls. The alpine scenery and wild flowers were spectacular. We were surprised that Ohakune was as large as it was. The town has a supermarket that is open late every day, even on public holidays. If you're into mountain biking there are plenty of great tracks to ride.
Views of the mountain were fab. Lots of choice for eating out with cultural variety. Bush walks and trail bikes to suit all ages. Easy to navigate the area. Close to Pipiriki for the tour to the Bridge to nowhere. Great scenery. Definitely need more than 2 days stay.
Enjoy the café across the road from New World, the sandwiches were so fresh, the hot chocolate so tasty and the milkshakes were a blast. Service was great. We also took time to visit The Army Museum on state highway one.
Stayed here the night in the middle of summer to conquer the Tongariro Crossing. 50 minutes to the end of the track by car and then picked up by shuttle to the beginning of the track. Beautiful view of mountain from Ohakune and easy access on the same road up the mountain.
Caught shuttle to Tongariro Crossing. Awesome experience walking the Tongariro Crossing. Next day we hired bikes and caught shuttle to Horopito and biked the Old Coach Trail from Horopito through to Ohakune. Amazing scenery, old railway bridge & tunnel, lots of history. We enjoyed a take away coffee and lunch at EAT cafe in Ohakune - great food & coffee.
One of the perfect budget accommodation i have ever stayed. Very neat and clean bed sheets, rooms, common facilities and the whole area. Excellent sleeping quality with unforgettable view of the snow filled mountain. I have spent only one night there in a family Ensuite, was not happy to leave. I would be definitely back to this small lovely lodge and will recommend to all my friends.
For a big family on a tight budget I thought this place was pretty reasonable. It had everything we required. Nice little stream out the back which was peaceful to listen to and a nice view of the mountain out the master window. Free use of the washing machine if needed. Also free wifi. There is also a sauna which we were unaware of.
This place was amazing value for our big family on a budget. It was very clean and tidy and had everything we needed. Theres an amazing DVD collection you can use, which is a bonus with kiddies to entertain. Nice seating area out the back. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We will definatly be going back. A+ from us 😊
The value for price was more then we thought, very clean, prefect size, very close to everything, very warm and family kind of feel, nice and modern, great spa, nice selection of movies to watch, great amount of space! Seriously great place to stay while in Mount Ruapehu! A++ would stay again!
Funky and interesting historic lodge. I loved that I didn’t have to haul my stuff very far. My spacious room was good for reorganizing after a tramp and Ohakune is a very cool town. Also, there is laundry and a great bar/restaurant on premises. Definitely plan a meal or a drink here.
Lovely looking, chalet style hotel. Good location just a quick drive to center of town. Free parking on site. Staff very friendly and helpful. Some rooms have decent sized patio, allows the rooms to feel bright. Onsite restaurant quite good, decent value and quick service.
Very tidy and we'll thought out room and facilities ... Breakfast and little extras we're fantastic ... Nice and peaceful ... Spa was a treat ... Owners made me and my son feel at home ... Went out of there way ... Will definitely be back again ...
Good motel, we enjoyed our stay. First it looks a little bit like a backpacker hotel but the guest rooms are really fine. Ohakune is a good place to stay, there are some nice Restaurants around the corner and the village is nice.
This is a large, comfortable, luxurious accommodation with beautiful grounds and views. The private deck was great as was the soaking tub (there’s a shower too). Very nice common space though we didn’t use it.
Super close to Ohakune, 2 minute walk into town. Private and quiet surroundings. Nice spa for night time. Super comfy beds and nice bathroom. Very modern property
The receptionist/manager was so welcoming and friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Best budget accommodation in Okahune! We will be back.
