Hotel in Omarama
The Heritage Gateway Hotel is situated in Omarama, at the crossroads of MacKenzie Basin, Lindis Pass and Waitaki Valley. It offers panoramic views and excellent hiking and biking opportunities. The receptionist was amazing!!!!!! Very friendly and welcoming, was easy to find (hop, skip and jump away from the local bar) and hassle free to get key, locating room ect would highly recommend to anyone I know and even strangers, could do with a sign stating prices from.....per room under name signage to help fill few more rooms as not many visitors staying when we were there, awesome value for $$ especially at short notice ,(booked only a couple hour prior), looks more expensive than it is AAA++++

Twizel (Near Omarama)
Quail Rest is located on Totara Peak Station which is a working High Country Station located on the shores of Lake Benmore 22kms from Twizel township. Free WiFi and private parking is included. This is exceptional! Highly recommended! The house is just to make you feel like home. It is easy to find. We follow iPhone map and then signage on the road. On the way to the cottage, the view is superb. We stopped by and took a lot of photos. There is a pasture next to our cottage, lots of sheep. You will love it if you love animals and wildlife. Door is open before our arrival, we stayed in and cooked to wait for the owner to greet us. The house is powered by solar and gas, totally off-grid. We love the idea of being eco-friendly by using renewable energy. Stargazing is possible. Bring food before getting there, otherwise it will take you 30-45 mins to go to the nearest shopping.

I was very appreciative of every facility and kindness that was offered to me when I stayed so close to Omarana. There was delicious food to buy and shops to explore with high class wool and possum clothing available for purchase. The dry climate helped my arthritis and gliding is a special activity to experience in this area as the thermals are extraordinary. Art is available to buy also.
We were there for a "stopover" on our way to Queenstown. We booked and enjoyed a 1.5hour soak in the local hot tub. We had dinner at the local pub which was friendly and the food was great and reasonably priced.
A really good base for exploring up to Mt Cook, or heading up to Lake Pukaki or Tekapo for the day with a picnic lunch or being prepared to go walking/tramping. You can also travel East down to the hydro Lakes, Benmore, Aviemore and further on. It could be used as a base for skiing at Ohau in the winter or at Tekapo/ skiing/ hot pools and so on. You could go and watch the gliders and or get some instruction in hang gliding, parapenting and so on.
The hot tubs are A MUST!. Most shop personal are very friendly. My only advice would be plan your meals well (or bring something to cook yourself with you) as not much open at night, and the man we spoke to about getting a meal at the pub was pretty rude.
Omarama is at a junction of major highways. From here you can travel to a lot of the mid South Island. There is plenty of good accomdation in the town and lots of places for refreshments. Clean toilets for public use and lots of activities available within a short distance. There are excellent roads in the town and surrounds
Omarama is a great place to stay, but make sure you have plenty of fuel onboard as the cost is prohibitive. We saw several people stopped on the side of the road filling up from 20 Litre cans that they had taken from home. Fuel that was $2 in Christchurch is $2.50 in Omarama.
