Pukeko Retreat is just someone’s home with a few rooms for rent. We arrived after dark to an odd reception: a handwritten note that welcomed us and said the key was on the table. And very few lights were on. Imagine walking into a seemingly empty stranger’s house with few lights on. However, the next morning we met the owner in the kitchen for coffee and had a fun, interesting conversation that covered politics, environment, NZ and other topics. Then he showed picked us some fresh-off-the-tree plums from his yard. Fantastic! The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was clean.
