Caniçal
Featuring exclusive direct access to the sea and a terrace, Vila Cais da Gaivota is a villa, set in Caniçal. The property features views of the Atlantic Ocean and is 12 mi from Funchal. Excellent site even if, at the first sight, the harbour facilities next door seem to be a major nuisance. At the end it’s just the ocean view that matters.

Everything. This house is perfect, home from home. It is huge with a wrap around terrace on the first floor, balcony on the main bedroom and the roof terrace is to die for with ocean, mountain and city views. Huge garage which will easily hold 3 cars. We were here as a couple but there is enough room for 3 families all with children and it is safe and secure. Everything you need from a home and also very comfortable. 10 minute walk to the beach and the walk back is not so bad. Ana the host is contactable all the time and is very helpful. Machico (Near Caniçal)
Set in Machico, within 984 feet of Sao Roque Beach, VIP Paradise Apartment is an accommodations offering sea views. I really think this is the most perfect place to stay, when in Madeira. 1min from the beach, incredible view on beach and mountains, close to anything you want or need. It is also extremely clean, spacious and comfortable. I already saw myself living in there. In short, this accommodation made our first stay in Madeira even more perfect than it already was. And last but not least: Very flexible hosts that allowed us to stay longer on the last day so my babyson could sleep before our long flight home, for which we really thank them!
There is nothing special to see and we didn't find any restaurants where the food was outstanding in Caniçal village. The only outstanding restaurant is Quinta do Lorde resort (in the lighthouse).
Locals are helpful and genuinely friendly. The competition to cater for visitors is fierce, which makes for high standards and good prices. Just do not let the car hire companies rip you off. I stood my ground at the airport, and reduced my charges by 250euro. If everyone does the same, they will have less room to manoeuvre. Although its 30 kilometers from Funchal its a pleasant drive on well built roads, if you like hustle and bustle this is not your place, if you like the sea and refreshing walks by the coast i recommend it highly.
We have not been to the city of Canical - but we stayed at Quinta da Lorde (which was really nice) and had a great walk around the islands at the far Eastern end of Madeira. Worth the 2.5 hours hike on PR8.
This town has few amenities and is down market. It is a port in the shadow of Machico for being a place to visit. We couldn't find anywhere we wanted to eat or drink. There was not even a decent shop. We had to get bus to Machico
Canical is a place for those wanting to get away from the regular goings on in Madeira. Its surrounded by bracken landscape and hills which can get quite windy but are great for walking to view the dramatic rock scapes and nesting birds. Quinta Do Lorde, is outside of Canical town and is almost to the end of the island road. From there you get on the nature trails.
