Castro Verde is a great base for touring the southern Alentejo .The town is interesting in itself and has some good local restaurants and bars.It is easily reached from the motorway and nearby towns like Beja and Mertola are easily accessible as are a number of very good wine estates that are well worth a visit .Evora and the marble towns are further afield but still within reach, as is the Aquelva reservoir.

As well as a base to stay to visit other sights in...

As well as a base to stay to visit other sights in surrounding areas, you can still do day trips from here to Lisbon or down to the Algarve, thanks to the motorways. The tolls have been removed from the Algarve,, but to get down there it will cost 6.6euros currently on the toll road and take 1.5hrs to get there. Castro Verde itself has some nice restaurants, a couple of large supermarkets like Lidl and Intermarche, plus a tourist information office behind the church you can see on the hill as you approach the town, for more local sights that are historical, bird watching etc.

Castro Verde is a small town but staying in this...

Castro Verde is a small town but staying in this accommodation means you can walk to most things needed, such small supermarket, bank, hardware stores and there was even a market of stalls at the bottom of the street one day. It has a large church (Basilica) at the top of the hill and sometimes small concerts are held here. The Tourist information office is just behind this building. Plenty of cafes and some good restaurants owned and operated by local people. There is also a large Lidl and InterMarche supermarket opposite each other, at the south end of the small town. It is a great base to explore other places in the region. Car parking can be a little hit and miss but on each day I found somewhere free on the streets, not too far away. The area is also known for its bird watching and tranquil spaces, but not somewhere for nightlife or noise, which is an attraction in itself of course. I will certainly visit again.

Castro Verde is a very pretty town; the accommodation is about a 5-6 minute walk from the centre. There is a lovely view over the surrounding countryside. The accommodation was very comfortable and the hosts were delightful. They left a bottle of rose in the fridge and a little bouquet on the dining table.

The perfect oasis for relaxation and peace. The staff is the friendliest you could hope for and the houses are superb and the location secluded enough for privacy but close to Castro Verde for exploring.
