Olhao is beutiful because it is still very local And friendly people in shops cafes restaurants Everything and anything you want to do is within Walking distance from wherever you are staying The quality of the food and the Real Marina hotel Is just awesome.
We loved this little town. Wonderful waterfront area, market and lots of winding streets to get lost on. Wonderful photo opportunities with the tile covered houses. Right on N125 which goes east to the Spanish border, and west to Cap St Vincent. Really convenient to Faro airport. Do try to get to Cha Cha Cha for dinner. A gem of a restaurant. A great place where you are surrounded by friendly locals enjoying their slice of heaven in the most amazing light.
If you like a relaxing holiday Olhao is a good place to be. The locals are very friendly and there are loads of eating places. The market is great and you can buy fresh food in the indoor market most days. There is a bigger market every saturday selling clothes and gifts together with fresh fruit veg and fish. You can travel around quite cheaply we used the train alot the only thing is the train stations aren't signposted. You can buy tickets on the train or at the station and if you are under 26 or have a senior card you can get a discount. It is a nice was to get to see things. The ferry was also quite cheap and it only took 20 mins to get to the island. There are loads of restaurants and cafes and it is a good family place. There are little play areas for children and it feels safe
We spent a short week in early march using Olhão as a base to visit the sights in the rest of the Algarve. Though there are more picturesque towns to stay in, Olhão has a no-nonsense and not too thoroughly touristic feel to it. We drove to many towns in the area like Faro, Tavira, Silves and Monchique. All recommended.
Olhao is a typical Portugese working town as opposed to a tourist resort. There are many derelict properties but it is obvious that the town is beginning to be of interest to those looking for a place in the sun at a reasonable price. There are many excellent restaurants serving delicious food. Portugese wine is beautiful. There is also huge value to be had if you want to have dinner/lunch out in one of the many fish restaurants where lunch can cost as little as 7 euro. Best advice is to use public transport to get around. Trains are very cheap eg we went to Vila Real de San Antonio by return the cost of my ticket was less than 9 euro for a return train journey of 1 hour. Treat yourself to hair and beauty treatments which will cost one third of the cost in Ireland. Use Olhao as a base to explore the RIA Formosa and Armona in particular. A visit to the fish market is a must.
If you want to experience the real Algarve and not be knee deep in burger bars and all day breakfast joints, Olhao is a very good place to start. The markets are fascinating and there are many unfussy restaurants from which to choose.

This guest house is a sweet little gem located in the charming center of the town of Olhão. The building was greatly renovated and decorated into the finest detail. There’s also a library and a great rooftop with a view. Olhão is still a genuine place but close to many beaches and must see spots in Algarve. The host was the sweetest warmest possible- full of attentions, tips and curiosities to share. We couldn’t feel more welcome and we totally suggest booking here.

When I booked this apartment, it had only few feedbacks and usually I don't trust such hotels. But it turned to be nice experience and was totally worth that money! Apartment is pretty decorated, has plenty of space and enough facilities. We spent here 1 night before early flight and had no problems to leave the keys. I recommend this place for small groups of young friends and everyone who needs a hotel before/after flight to Faro.
