Sabugal
Located in the medieval village of Sabugal, one of oldest in Portugal, Palheiros do Castelo offers traditional cottages with a fireplace. Nice cottage located next to castle wall with patio overlooking the village below. Other cottages must also be nice. 4 years ago I stayed at the one room cottage across from the castle. Best to park in the castle square free parking area. Other streets are too narrow for parking. To get to parking, drive straight up (slightly left) from the east clock tower gate in the castle walls. Our cottage would be great for a couple. Ground floor kitchen/dining area/fireplace. Upper level with 2 nice big bedrooms. Nice wood floors and rock walls. Great Wi Fi (remember to reserve mobile hot spot with owner, Pedro Carreira, who is always helpful. Remember also that the keys are obtained from the coffee cafe behind the Museum of Portugal, go down outdoor stairway on the left side of Museum. Temporarily park in the front of the Museum. Make own breakfast. If you are there for Sunday, get bread rolls or other breakfast items on Friday as the bakery or food store is closed on Sunday and maybe closes early on Saturday.

The free breakfast was delicious and the location was perfect. Easy waking distance to everything and a large H on the rooftop that you can see from anywhere in the village makes it easy to find your way back home any time of night. The village is very social and nice. I get extremely safe traveling alone. Also, free parking was available right outside the hotel.
