Honestly . The only thing-and it is what it is-is that there is no elevator/lift. If you have mobility issues or just don't like walking up the stairs and lugging baggage, then you might have an issue

You get the best of both worlds in Tavira - the feel of an historic old town and a lovely trip to the beach via the ferry. Lovely restaurants and bars.
Auroura - beautiful steak house, bit pricey but worth it.
O Patio, O Tonel, Tempero Caseiro (cheap but really tasty) and Canhala.
Bishops Square - pop by and see Leonardo in his pastelaria/restaurant/bar - cheapest wine in the town but always, always busy.

A charming town and free from high rise apartment blocks or huge hotels. Full of character and interest. The beaches are close by and a few can be accessed by ferry about 15 minute ride away. Others by bus or uber.
A few restaurants really hit the spot: Come Na Gaveta, Pausa, O Castelo and Artefact.
The castle is worth a visit and most places are walkable. Comfortable shoes a must as the streets are cobblestones.

A lovely town with great restaurants and bars, shops and some lovely old buildings. Good public transport links - train, bus and boat - to nearby towns, villages and beaches. It can be busy, but it has a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Tavira is nice, but the stones polished by decades of cars and foot traffic made the sloping sidewalks/roads feel almost treacherous. This is not the location to get away from freezing rain. Some of the old area in the east side is undergoing upgrades to the water system, which means it may be dusty.

Cute little city full of 70 year old tourists.
Cute little city full of 70 year old tourists. Few restaurants other than Indian food. Little shopping. Beaches nice but very difficult to access. Pararia do barrill involves street parking then walking a half mile to a train which will take you 1 mile to the beach for 2eu each way. Or you can walk on a slanted broken walkway all the way. At the beach there is one overpriced restaurant.
Overall Tavira is Not family friendly at all.
Stunning hotel , best location as in a cute square surrounded by lovely restaurants and cafes within a 1 minute walk from Roman bridge and centre of Tavira. Beautifully presented rooms and stylish ,artfully presented breakfasts with delicious baking / cooking and service, tranquil yet friendly.Every single team member went out of their way to be thoughtful , friendly and considerate- really top level .Run to book here, it’s truly an oasis of quality and style. Plan to return 🌻
Recommended by Rough Guide to Portugal- absolutely right. Delightful place right by the ferry boat to Ilha da Tavira. Nice room. Good breakfasts. The Mares could not be better located, you are right in the heart of everything. A great five day stay with trips to Faro, Vila Real de SA and Fuseta. Helpful bus link to Seville. Many different ways to make a stay enjoyable. For eating go to the Restaurante Simco.
Friendly staff and efficient check-in. Lovely room, good size. Quiet with blackout curtains. Balcony and fridge. Beds clean and comfy. Kettle and tea bags in room (unusual for Portugal), but no milk supplied. Large bathroom with walk in shower.
Breakfast 7.30-10.30 - good selection of hot and cold food.
Good breakfast, very friendly owner and staff. Great location in the center of the charming town (definitely one of the best towns to stay in Algarve), free parking available in the street in front of the hotel or nearby, lots of good restaurants in vicinity. I would definitely choose it again.
Perfect hotel for a short stay in Tavira; just minutes away from all the life in town as well as to the ferry to Tavira beach. The room was clean, bed was comfy and the price very competitive. Would definitely stay again on a next short trip to Tavira.
