As I was lucky to see amazing aurora activity, my reviews might be positively inclined because aurora experience for me was surreal. Abisko in winter is beautiful. The frozen lakes, waterfalls and the landscape were breathtaking especially for a person like me who originally belong to a tropical region. There are many interesting activities like dog sledding, snowmobile, snow shoe walks which makes your experience more memorable.
A hiker´s dream! You can select trails on flat terrain or go up to the mountains. Always in extremely quiet and wide nature. I did very much like the hike from Abisko via Njulla to Björkliden and back on Rallarvegen. End of September, I have seen aurora lights every night.
October is between summer and winter seasons, so almost everything was closed except supermarket and walking trails. But trails are well marked and easy to follow. Good place to relax and enjoy nature. When staying in Abisko Östra (village Abisko), then you have to add 3+3 km walking in addition to walking trails you are taking. Be ready for 9-15km walks daily. Next time I would avoid hostels and choose more expensive place with more privacy.
I was amazed to see such a big grocery supermarket. We took food thinking it was just a little village. There are so many trails well sign posted to stretch your legs. No matter how cloudy or rainy the day was, each night cleared up to almost a fully clear sky
What a lovely little town in the far northern reaches of Sweden. It's microclimate makes it ideal for aurora watching. Stayed only one night at the Abisko Mountain Lodge. Additionally, we arranged for an outstanding aurora photo tour with Lights Over Lapland, which made the experience that much more wonderful. Could have well stayed at least one or two more nights. Other activities like skiing, snow mobile and dog sled rides and so on appear to be available. I cannot speak about summer tourism, but I bet that it is a wonderful place to experience the midnight sun.
Abisko is a beautiful, wild place. It is very easy to get around and the people are friendly. If you are a fan of wine like I am, make sure to bring your own as it's not sold anywhere near Abisko (just beer). In the very short weekend I had to go explore Abisko I was able to meet cool people from around the world, experience an arctic snowstorm, see the Aurora Borealis, go ice climbing, and walk multiple paths and trails in the National Park and paths around town. The lunch and 3 course dinner with wine pairing at the Mountain Tourist Station in Abisko National Park was amazing!! (Nod to the chef).
