Friedly city, everything is close and you can walk around the city. The view is so nice! People are friendly. Favorite place is the historical Palace of course. We had meals at Slottspaviljongen - the food was very nice and very good service. Very easy to get around in Mariefred
The initial welcome set a lovely tone to our stay. We were there for a wedding-would do more research and planning for a longer visit-so much to see. The hotel could have some people to guide newcomers like ourselves to the bnb accommodation as it is some distance away.
The preserved steam railway is excellent and has a longer operating season than most others in Sweden. The castle is also very interesting and it has the national portrait gallery inside which is superb. However it is not open all week in the winter so check opening times carefully. The lakeside location is very scenic. Public transport is quite good for a rural area. There was also quite a good shopping area.
The town is attractive and Gripsholm Castle very impressive. There are very limited choices for evening meals; the Slottspaviljongen restaurant was the obvious choice, with good food and charming staff. Unfortunately, our hotel experience at Gripsholms Vardshus was so disappointing; perhaps there is other accommodation in Mariefred.
Mariefred is just very beautiful and I found there a perfect rest. During wintertime you may not find to many things to do in Mariefred but during summertime there are a lot opportunities to spend active time in this village. I can definitely recommend this place.
The general atmosphere of the place is great ! The room is very spatious and the best exceptionnally confortable ! We also had dinner and breakfast, and both were very well prepared and delicious. We appreciated the fast that most (if not all?) products are local and organic. We can highly recommand this hotel.
