The Tolmin Gorges are absolutely breathtaking.
The Tolmin Gorges are absolutely breathtaking. The brilliant turquoise waters in the rivers of the valley are like nothing I've ever seen before. The well-marked and -constructed paths made it fun and manageable (but appropriately challenging) for our 5-year-old daughter. Caves, warm springs, waterfalls, beautiful rock formations, and, of course, the incredible crystal waters made it an incredible way to spend a morning.
The food in the area was excellent, with a pizzeria in Tolmin as the highlight. Outdoor seating and pizza as good as anything I've had in Rome, I was certainly pleasantly surprised. The fried calamari is a specialty of the region and can be found all over; it was even pretty good at the snack bar right outside the Gorges.
Tolmin far exceeded our expectations, and we wish we could've stayed more than one night.
