Some pretty areas, but nothing too special. Very dense, bad traffic and packed streets for such a small town, unpleasant and difficult to get around. No rental bikes at all. Unhelpful tourism desk at the train station send me to places that had already closed and didn't have updated bus times. Hinoki Village is very pretty and pleasant, and the nearby Jail is an interesting historical site but has no English at all. The Fine Arts museum is very beautiful and pleasant but didn't have much to see. Annoying and difficult to get anywhere due to lack of rental bikes. Annoying, sparse schedule of buses and trains to Alishan made this the only city in Taiwan where I really, really felt the need for private transportation. Compared to other small towns in Taiwan, there wasn't that much to see and the density was worse than average, with a ton of traffic even on side streets that made exploration unpleasant.

Less bustling than the other cities in Taiwan. The night market here had some of the best food we had had all trip (douhua omg!). Travelling from here to Fenqihu (to go to Alishan) was easy and stress free. The people here we're very helpful and polite, seeing that we were a little lost.

Commonly underestimated as the mere starting point for the Alishan Forest Rail express - Chiayi itself is a very friendly town with amazing fruits, nice local market vendors and pretty temples and parks to explore. Just grab a map at the tourist information when you arrive at the train station, the maps provided give you some tips for exploring the city. Would totally recommend spending a day there before heading to Alishan, you won't regret it!

We really enjoyed our stay in the city. It's not mentioned in major travel books. Easy to walk, and plenty to see and lounge. Japanese village, huge train park, and new clean museums. American style upstart restaurants. Agreed we were turned away (politely) by some businesses etc.. others that spoke no English welcomed us. Plenty of cultural free park events that we accidentally walked in on or by.

Chiayi City technically has a small population, but feels much larger, with plenty of chic new locations like Mugeneration Cafe as well as temples and historical sites like the Kagi Shrine from the Japanese era, and a baseball stadium for sports fans. The food and food markets are superb, and due to its rural location extremely cheap, so it's great for students or families on a budget. Likewise, there are plenty of cheap and convenient hotels that offer excellent value for money. There is an excellent internal bus service that can be easily used with an easycard, but walking is always a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. For travel, the city has a train station that can take you anywhere in the county and a HSR line an hour and a half from Taipei. This connectivity is great for would-be explorers, with great towns like Dalin a short train ride away, and a devoted line for Alishan. Altogether, I firmly recommend Chiayi City to travellers.

I enjoyed Chiayi very much. It is a little bit quieter than most other Taiwanese cities. Reminds more of a West Coast city really. Chiayi Tower and the park around it is very peaceful. There is plenty of shopping in the city. Night markets are good. The old prison tour was great even though I don't speak mandarin(no english option). Hinoki Village is overrated(plus my kid chucked a huge tantrum there). Driving around town was very simple. I extended my stay by 1 extra night because I liked the place that much. We stayed for 4 nights in total.

The staff is very friendly and fulfills every wish! The hotel is very clean and very modern. A breakfast with toast, jam, coffee and tea and the use of the kitchen are free of charge. You feel at home! Next time in Chiayi we will book this hotel again.

Room is big. Location is great, few minutes walk to train station. There is a bus stop nearby and I am able to board the bus to Alishan before those waiting at the bus stop outside the train station.
