Alamosa has a wonderful italian restaurant called "The Friar's Fork" Really delicious. I wish we would have had more time to explore more of Alamosa. We were just passing through on a trip but very glad we stopped.
We attended the Sandhill Crane Festival in Monte Vista but chose to stay in Alamosa because hotel rates were less expensive than Monte Vista. Alamosa and the surrounding areas offer fantastic views of snow-capped mountains. Both the Alamosa and Monte Vista Wildlife Refuges offer excellent opportunities to observe and photograph wildlife. There are many outdoor activities available to those who love to drive or hike and explore.
My family and I went to the Colorado Gators farm. It was a blast very family friendly, which is great since I have a 3-year-old and 10-year-old sons. Even my 20-year-old so had a lot of fun. It was my first time being to the farm, great staff and atmosphere. We ate at Chili's our first night there and the service was really fast and friendly staff. It's really easy getting around Alamosa. My older son lives, he's going to college at Adam State University. I would only avoid the motel we stayed at for our visit.
The town has grown quite a bit over the last tweny-five years. It still has the old charm of a small place. The sand dunes and Lu's Diner in Blanca are just a short drive from town. I enjoy Caviellos Mexican restaurant and the local pub on Main in Alamosa. Picnics are lovely in city park and plenty of tables to choose from too!
Our stay at The Dunes was an unexpected and extreme pleasure !! After an all day visit to a local National Park, we were ready for a good nights sleep. While driving to The Dunes, we ran ober a rock in the highway which caused a flat tire that shredded it to the point of having to be towed into The Dunes. The owner was SUPER KIND to syay, after hours,, to check us in, provide any needed assistance, etc. The next day, when we were notified our vehicle was ready for pick up, owner of The Dunes, volunteered to drive us to the garage to pick up our vehicle. We only wish we took the time to get his name. I can easily state that I would definitely stay at The Dunes if ever in the area !! We've never met a motel owner as kind and considerate,. He, in our opinion, went above and beyond being helpful. Not only a terrific owner/manager, but The Dunes was a excellent lodging experience.
Alamosa itself is a small and very poor town. Three of the restaurants we found on google were permanently closed. We try to go to the Monte Vista and Alamosa National Wildlife Refuges during the Sandhill Crane migrations, and the cranes never disappoint. One reason for choosing the Sunset Inn was to be on the road, 8 S, that leads directly west to the Monte Vista site. The cranes can be best seen in the morning, and we saw many of them even as late as 11 am!

Front desk staff was extremely friendly. The room was a perfect size for what we needed it for, and clean to boot. The Sunset Inn was easy to find as well. Alamosa isn't a big town, but I found it welcoming and this hotel was no different. Also, the breakfast was simple, but easily the best hotel breakfast I've had in awhile. Finally there was a very sleepy, older cat at the front desk. My fiancé loves cats. This hotel was a big win for our trip.
Large clean room, well kept and remodeled with keeping the vibe of the old hotel. My room was near rhe street but traffic wasn't loud. Good parking. Breakfast was good sit down choice of 5 breakfasts. I had the oatmeal which was make right then so wasn't overly mushy like crockpot oatmeal in some places. Would stay again with spouse.
I really appreciate all the things the hotel does about the Covid 19, the room are fully sanitized, all the personnel wear mask and have a strong hygiene process when checking in and out, we really felt safe! The room was super clean and confortable with all you need for a quick stop a Great Sand Dunes !
I really loved the stay in this hotel. The location was great, the staff was friendly, nice and clean rooms, complimentary staff for the guest, free, free parking and amazing breakfast, especially in covid times!
Friendly staff, easy check-in & out, clean room with everything needed. Good darkening curtains & comfortable pillows. Would certainly choose this hotel again.
