Downtown is always fun, with lots to do.
Downtown is always fun, with lots to do. I enjoy the atmosphere down there, and people are friendly. Getting around is fairly simple, and the Dart service is great; we used it to get to the fair very easily.

The hotel was not the cleanest and had a horrible weed smell...
The hotel was not the cleanest and had a horrible weed smell when walking into the lobby. It's obvious there is smoking it going on inside and nothing is being done about it. The bed was not comfortable. I regret booking this location and will not stay here again. Save yourself the disappointment and book elsewhere.

The food and music festival was so enjoyable that we plan to return. Their State fair is well worth a visit. We enjoyed The High Life Lounge which shares space with El Bait Shop for the friendly service, comfort food and expansive beer options and will return on our next trip.

Des Moines, Iowa might just be the cleanest city we’ve ever...
Des Moines, Iowa might just be the cleanest city we’ve ever stepped foot in—like someone hit the whole place with Windex and a giant mop. We wandered through downtown, dodging packs of fit folks on their celebratory struts for the National Senior Olympics. The river looked like it had one too many and spilled over its dams, flooding the lower walkway. Zombie Burger was a certified hangout spot, and the sculpture garden? A few unexpected gems made it well worth the stroll.

Des Moines is a great stop-over city.
Des Moines is a great stop-over city. If you're traveling and need to rest, stop in Des Moines for a few days. You will find great restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere. My favorite time to visit is in the summer. The Capitol Building and grounds are beautiful and historical (of course). Visitors are welcome inside. The Living History Farm and the Blank Park Zoo are fun outings with the kids. The Iowa State Fair in August cannot be beat! Shuttles from the Capitol parking make it easy with drop off at the fairground gates. Tempt your tastebuds with anything fried on a stick! ;-)

It was a two-day business trip, and I intended to be austere. I did not engage with the community; however, from personal trips to Des Moines, I know that there are many family friendly things to do and to enjoy, especially in the non-winter seasons. It is easy to travel within Des Moines.
