Gorgeous, must-see site if at all possible. A bit out-of-the-way, but well worth the effort!! Highly recommend a jeep tour with a knowledgeable local. You miss/lose a lot if you drive around by yourself.
We decided to take self guided drive through tour to see the views at sunset. Arrived at the ticket booth at 5:05 PM to find out that it closed at 5:00. The only way to enter the park after 5PM is with an authorized guide.
Exceptional natural beauty. We drove the 2 hour Valley trail in our 2WD but probably should have taken a tour as it was quite rough. Take the 30 minute ride to Goosenecks State Park. You won’t be disappointed!
We didn’t actually go in to the park because we were on motorcycles, which are not allowed on the roads as they are not paved. It would be a waste to pay the entrance fee, which is not covered by an annual parks pass by the way, just to park at the main lot. But you can see all the formations from the roads around the park as well, so it was not necessary. We had fabulous views from the access roads and made incredible photos.
Monument Valley is simply amazing. I’ve wanted to go there for a long time, and we finally made the trip. We booked a tour with Goulding’s and it was worth every penny. We were able to experience many things (e.g. petroglyphs) that visitors driving their own cars could never see. Our Navajo guide was awesome...very informative and shared lots of great stories.
The Valley Loop drive was incredible. Take your time to stop at each of the overlooks. It's easy to spend 2-3 hours on the drive with stops. At the John Ford overlook, there was an opportunity to have your picture taken on a horse for a small fee. It was worth it! It is as if time has stood still in this part of Arizona. Make sure to stop at the Visitor Center to take some pictures as well. If you don't take a paid tour and opt to do the drive in your car instead, enjoy the journey.
