Surprisingly great restaurants and a charming waterfront. My third time, so I don't think it has much more depth for me to explore, but I love stopping for a day on the way back to NY from more remote Maine towns in the north.
Nice city but being overrun with homeless. Needles, condoms, and human feces are abundant. The waterfront is nice as is the old part of the city, but be advised panhandlers and other seedy types abound. So bottom-line, a once great city has turned to crap because those in charge would rather be PC than run clean safe city. My advice, visit other areas in Maine, they are truly beautiful. Portland is a cesspool.
Portland is a great city with lots to see and do. Great restaurants and waterfront. Lots of boutiques and shops, art, art glass, and the usual tourist souvenir shops. Visited in Late October, weather was beautiful and sunny, though a little chilly on the water and in the evenings.
Since we are frequent visitors to Portland Oregon, which is a much bigger city we were pleased to find many of the same things we love about PDX! Great places to eat ( even with the Covid restrictions), particularly the brew pubs. Fun areas to walk around with a nice mix of local artisan gallerys and your stanndard gift shops. Short drive out to the historic Portland Head Lighthouse. Many more options for things to do- we would gladly come back again when more sites are open again,
I live in Maine. I go to Portland mostly for medical care and I enjoy going to the shops, restaurants, and parks. Although the "Old Port" is supposed to be the place to go, I find there are many more interesting and less commercial places in town. I do not like staying in the many (new and nameless) big box hotels that are being built on or near the waterfront. They are an eyesore and, for that reason, I refuse to stay in these rabbit warrens by the sea and I avoid even walking by the monsters if possible. There are some nice places to stay that are real "Maine" places. Portland is a big town; it is not a city. There are ferry rides that are the best way to see the water and get a closer look at the islands.
Best place for Lobster and nature tripping. Highly recommend for Portland Lobster co and Giddys Clam chowder, Duckfat, Sinful Kitchen for Brunch and ofcourse the Holy Donut Never miss to try. Take a boat trip to Peak Island and Long Island thru Casco Bay and visit all there coastline scenic view.
Beautiful design, great location, wonderful staff, quiet room and comfortable bed.
