Located in Salto, Hermoso Apartamento En el Centro de Salto offers terrace, free WiFi, a 24-hour front desk, and a tour desk. Everything we needed was supplied. The hosts had already thought of everything. Also there are some very nice decorating touches in the apartment. It is comfortable and I feel totally at home. The downtown location has been good as well, there are fascinating old buildings and two plazas nearby. The contrast between old and new architecture is amazing in Salto. We enjoyed our brief stay in this lively small city on the Argentine border. In fact it's closer to Buenos Aires than it is to Montevideo. Useful shops, Cambios giving good rates of exchange and a few good local restaurants on the main street. Worth a visit.
I would have loveed to be able to visit ¨Las Nubes¨house of the writer and poet Enrique Amorin, but apparently this is no longer possible. Very interesting collection at the Museum of Art, centrally located, and the building alone is worth the visit. Unfortunately the lack of funds is only too visible, it is in bad need of maintenance
Seemed like a place where there's not a lot going on. We stayed for one night just because we were on our way to the Argentinian side. Beware that during carnaval, both Salto and Concordia are completely shut down, with next to no open shops, restaurants or hotels. We couldn't even cross the border by ferry because the harbors were closed.
Salto is a pleasant town with restaurants, shops, banks and a good base for visiting the thermal springs and hydroelectric dam. A dam doesn't sound exciting but it is worth a visit to see this amazing feat of engineering and you get to drive across to Argentina and back. English explanations by Mercedes Nieto were excellent and delivered with warmth and smiles.
It's a stop off point. The "hot springs" are just warmed pools really. You have to go a fair way out of town to get the real thing. Unless you are not in a hurry and want nothing to do for a few days, I would just keep going through.
