This hotel is situated in a really stunning location within a national park. The grounds and the whole of Nelson's Dock Yard have been restored and the gardens manicured. The hotel itself is all about exceptional quality, from the facilities to the rooms to the staff. Access to the twinned Gun Powder Suites and "boom" (name) restaurant and pool really makes this place. The short boat ride (2 mins) across the docks ads to the joy. Especially with the boat driver who has worked at the hotel for the past two owners. Breskfast is exceptional, though after our first few days we did start eating out more. The restaurant is fine dining, my beef pairing with creamed mash and steamed veg on the first night was mind blowing, my girlfriends Sea Food Chowder was beyond words good!! But that comes with a small price rise over other places near by. There's a short but challenging hike (45 mins) over a large hill / small mountain to pigeon beach which is deserted I'm November (low season) when we visited. The sands are pure white, the water is warm and you have the place to yourself. There is a much less strenuous route to / from the beach via the Yacht Club, it's just not as beautiful as the off road bike route. We went back this way with a stop off for breaks or early lunch at Bar-B's (good value, honest food, decent (ish) coffee, amazing fruit smoothies, or Skullduggery - amazing burgers and their own rum - which is a must try. We bought loads for family and friends after meeting the owners wife and daughter (do not race the 6 yr old daughter in the pool, she's surprisingly quick)!
