The 74-kilometer coastal hiking route is divided into four daily stages: the mountain stage, the brick stage, the crow stage, and the beach stage. Each stage winds along the shores of the fjord, offering varied and sometimes hilly scenery. Along the way, you will have ample opportunity to see rare plants and animals, as well as many interesting biotopes and landscapes ' from orchids, frogs and birds to tunnel valleys, cliffs and rocky reefs. Following the Gendarmes' Trail, it is not difficult to imagine how the border gendarmes kept their eyes and ears open as they walked their fixed routes along the steep slopes, through the mysterious forests and along the flat beaches. Their job was to keep an eye out for smugglers trying to bring goods in or out of the country without paying the customs duties that had been one of Denmark's main sources of revenue for centuries. The Border Guard was established in 1839 to protect customs officials on the border between the duchies along the Elbe
