The house is situated above the sea and the vineyards in an oak forest on the steep slopes of the Albères with a fantastic view over the Roussillon plain over the Mediterranean Sea to the snow-capped peaks around the Canigou, in southern Roussillon or French Catalonia on the border with Spain. The property is overgrown with oaks. There you will find beautiful, semi-shade places with a wonderful view over the plain of Perpignan. On the steep slopes of the property grow wild herbs like thyme, rosemary or oregano and real aloe vera. You have the most beautiful view from the large fully covered terrace tiled with genuine terracotta. There is a comfortable lounge seating area and a garden table with 6 chairs. In the morning there is sun on the terrace from the east. In the midday heat, when the sun is high, you enjoy shade, in the late afternoon the sun comes back gently from the west to the terrace. The large living/dining room with an open, well-equipped kitchen is open to the terrace through sliding glass doors and has the same breathtaking view. So the weather can be almost all the same to you. The use of the shared outdoor swimming pool in the domaine is included.
Laroque has been our second home for more than 35 years. For many years we have also occasionally rented our holiday home, which was originally situated a little further down the mountain, but is now permanently rented to a friend who has fallen in love with the cottage. When we found Villa Josephine, she knocked us out. My mother, who had been living with her partner down in the village on the way to the domain for years, had heard about it from a neighbour and drew my attention to it, and I had flown to France to see it. I remember the first time I entered the terrace and saw the view. One could see on the left the snow-covered Canigou and on the right the sea and the mountains behind the plain and all places in between.... also our old holiday house had had a great view, but here we were even higher and the huge terrace.... I called my husband and said that he didn't have to look at it. I had already decided for it. So I'm really looking forward to sharing our Villa Josephine with you. You will have a wonderful time.
Above the house there are several walking and hiking trails that lead through the Alberes up to Noillos, the highest mountain of the Alberes. The surrounding towns of St Genis, Sorede, St André, Argeles-sur-mer, Collioure, Port Vendres, Brouilla, Bages, Elne..... All of them have medieval town centres and, in addition to the typical tranquil landscape marked by a wine-growing tradition, they also hold some wonderful cultural treasures. Famous is the lintel of the monastery of St. Genis in the neighbouring village or the cathedral of Elne from the 10th century, but also look at the innumerable small medieval chapels, hermitages and monasteries over which you stumble almost every walk. A walk through the medieval alleys from Laroque to the old fortified castle of Laroque, which dates from the 12th century, is highly recommended. The wonderful light of the "Cote Vermeille", which attracted many famous artists of Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism, has made the nearby villages of Collioure and Ceret famous, which they have immortalized in their paintings. In the house you will find extensive recommendations for excursions and hikes.
