Along the canals all sous terrains (between ground floor and cellar) are used for living. From the window of this sous terrain one has a view on the street and the canal. There is a new bathroom, a toilet and a comfy bed. The Brouwersgracht was elected as most beautiful street (canal) of the Netherlands and the street parallel to it as best shopping street of the Netherlands. Our house is located on the optimal spot of the Brouwersgracht, just in front of the 17th century square and building of the West Indian Company from where Peter Stuyvesant arranged to start the city of New Amsterdam, now better known as New York. The 17th century canal house itself was build for the owner of the storage house next to it. That is why part of it was build just in front of the back of the neighbors and an access door is placed in the middle of the corridor. The house runs in the family since around 1950.

Amsterdam's Jordaan is probably the most famous neighbourhood in the Netherlands. The Jordaan is nothing but highlights. Maze-like streets offer hidden courtyards, cafés (traditional but also trendy), art galleries and pleasant neighbours. One also has access to some of the more scenic outdoor markets in the country. In particular, Noordermarkt has a flea market on Monday mornings and an organic farmers' market on Saturdays. There are many more modern, trendy bars around Noordermarkt and along Westerstraat and Brouwersgracht. The side-streets that run south of Westerstraat have recently developed into a strong culinary district with some of the city’s more highly regarded restaurants.
