The builder was a very intelligent man who had a beautiful nature. As a result of what I saw I purchased his book about life at San Michelle. He was a doctor who was in touch with nature and humanity
Get here early as large groups descend on the island around midday. The cafe up stairs in the complex is well worth a visit and you can gain access to it via the museum but you dont have to pay to go there only if you want to visit Axel Munthes home, just make whoever is onthe desk aware that you want access to the cafe only.
Wow what can I say, staying at Villa San Michele exceeded my expectations of the place and all other places I have ever stayed in! Alex and his mother Helder where amazing hosts. Alex met us in the centre at Anacapri and brought us to the villa, where we where given a complimentary drink. Heads gave us great insights to the island and wrote down all we should do on a map. It was very helpful and without her we probably wouldn’t have discovered as much as we did. Everyday the rooms where cleaned and we where given complimentary Italy breakfast (crossiant, biscuits, juice and waters) which was a pleasant surprise and a nice pick me up in the morning. I am so happy we found this place and chose to stay in Anacapri instead of Capri. There is a more local vibe in this area and it is far less packed. I would highly recommend staying at Villa San Michele if you want to really full in love with the whole island! Thank you for having us, we will definitely be back one day.
This was an unexpected gem! Incredible house/museum situated amid an absolutely beautiful garden. The cafe is also great. Axel Munthe was a very interesting man, and it is reflected in this property. I urge anyone visiting Anacapri to take the time to go here.
A must see in Anacapri, especially if you've read (and loved) Axel Munthe's "The Story of San Michele". Beautiful villa (designed and mainly built by Axel himself), gardens, views and the 4000 yo Sphinx. Axel Munthe was a rare human being, who lived an incredible life, and I can only encourage everyone to read his book and visit the villa!
It is a very nice place to visit. Ypu get more privacy since there are less people in a place were you need to pay (7€ per person). However, it is not much more amazing than the rest of the island. So it is not worth the money...
