The main part of the castle is closed and completely covered by scaffolding. There was no discount to the ticket or real acknowledgement of this at the entrance to the castle, so we felt pretty bamboozled by the time we walked in. It was a heck of a disappointment. The other sections of the grounds that were open were amazing, so I'm sure we would have loved the castle if we could go in it. The plum blossoms were also starting to bloom and they were stunning.
The castle is still undergoing major renovation so you won't see all there is to see. It seemed annoying at first that all the rooms contain replacement screens but having paid to see the originals in the gallery (which isn't up to much) I actually think you have a better impression of what it was like seeing replicas. I haven't seen anywhere else like it in Japan. The gardens were also lovely.
Nijo Castle is definately a must see. You can spend about 5 hours here just reading all the information. Very informative and the wall paintings were just beautiful. The dressed figures of the Shoguns gave a cultural feel of what it would have been like. It was another amazing Castle on our Japan holiday
The wall paintings are impressive. The extra visit of the gallery is not worth it. You can get entrance tickets for the castle online. If you have the choice between Nijo and Himeji we recommend Nijo. We queued for 2 hours to get into Himeji and one hour inside to get up and down seven floors but there is no interior decoration in Himeji...
It could be a very long line to the entrance (we were waitning 1h 30 min.). But it`s worth to! Visit at the castle takes 2 hours (Japanese order;)). But the garden is beautiful either ... so book at least an 1 -2 hours for this visit.
The center of Kyoto! If you look at your bus map, it's right in the middle! Went at night when the colourful lights were on, with a Japanese friend explaining to me the history of the castle. It was so beautiful, it gave me chills! Being inside the castle takes you to a different era. Taking photos inside the castle isn't allowed.
This is a little 12-roomed hotel in the old town of Kyoto. You can conveniently walk to Nijo Castle or to Nishiki Market. It's a 6-7 minute walk from various bus and metro stops too. The neighbourhood is charming and the hotel staff are happy to recommend places for breakfast, which isn't provided. The size of the hotel makes for very personalized service, and I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Next time I'm in Kyoto, I will almost certainly stay here again.
Very nice boutique hotel in central location. Apartment-like rooms with separate bedrooms, living room, and fully equipped kitchen, suitable for families and extended stays. Very clean and quiet. Fast and secure WiFi. Great water pressure. Very safe property and neighborhood. Several good restaurants and public transportation in walking distance. Kyoto Imperial palace and Nijo Castle in walking distance. Central market and shopping district 15 minutes by public transport.
Ken and his assistant were very helpful. Our GPS got us a little lost as we approached the property & Ken came out to meet us & guided us the rest of the way. We are a family of five & had ample room to spread out. We parked our car at the property & used public transportation the entire stay. There’s a few decent restaurants near the property & the Nijo Castle & Imperial Palace are in reasonable walking distance.
Small hotel near the heart of Kyoto - between the Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace. The room was excellent, modern and clean - what I would expect from a 3.5-4 start hotel, with a traditional Japanese sitting area (not all rooms have this). Staff was friendly and very helpful - they showed us what the "must see" spots were in the city. Breakfast was supplied by a local café less than a block away, with superb coffee.
The house is stunning inside, a truly luxurious treat. We were greeted quickly and warmly, and every request was happily met. Location is great, near Nijo Castle and station. Right in the heart of a residential community, so go the feel of real Kyoto as we walked the neighborhoods. We loved our stay here!
The location is just three subway stations away to the popular tourist area around Gion. You can even walk to Nijo Castle from the hotel. Several convenient stores and a drugstore are nearby. Reception is quick for check-in and check-out.
The hotel is very well located and very close to Nijo Station. Nijo Castle is 20 minutes by foot from the Hotel. Overall, the attention was good and the rooms were small but comfortable.
AMAZING ramen in Oike Dori at the crossroad near Nijo Castle (south-east castle corner, north-east crossroad side, Nijo Castle metro)
If you do not mind flash mobs of tourists bombing your photos, which is very common in Kyoto, Nijo Castle is the most interesting of all.
