Arrive for 8 when they open. We cycled in with our 5 year old and our baby and were amongst only a handful of people to go in at 8.It was magical without the crowds, the sun was low in the sky giving the buildings a beautiful light and impressive silhouettes and the birds were still singing their morning chorus. Also, it wasn't hot yet. When we left at 10.45 it was hot and crowded with a huge queue of people still lining up to enter.
We went late in the afternoon. Not too busy. Parked on the beach road by Santa Fe beach access and a short walk from there via the old beach road now pedestrian only. Saves the parking fee and longer walk!
We went on Easter Sunday and I think because of this there were 2 queues - 1 for Mexicans and 1 for internationals; the Mexican queue is very long but international queue is very short and may be missed from afar so head right up to the entrance and ask about the queue.
The ruins are a bit anticlimactic after you've seen Uxmal or Chichen Itzen. But the location on the beach is beautiful. The best tip is to arrive early and go to the beach. From floating on the water looking back at the ruins lining the beach is magnificent.
Amazing place but get there early and enjoy the ruins before the tour buses turn up. Take your swimming gear and cool off in a perfect cove. We had this to ourselves till the tours turned up but when they get there its time to go . Way too full
Gorgeous late Mayan temple complex. 1. GO EARLY!!! Even though the ruins are out on an elevated point, much of the complex is below the cliff edge and gets next to no breeze. We've never done a guided tour; but most of the people who do seem very pleased by the additional information they provide. 2. Do NOT be overly-frustrated by the (sometimes VERY) aggressive shop owners' and costumed performers' constant "marketing" strategies: this is their livelihood; and given the poverty in the region, there are likely lots of family members dependent on the $5 you give them to have your picture taken. 3. The same can generally be said about the tour operators in the parking lot. I honestly have no idea whether they are actually affiliated with the park and ruins (some other tour guides suggest that the answer is "no."), but the bundles of snorkeling, spelunking, and cruising up the reef are certainly no WORSE deals than your going to find elsewhere. Enjoyable and worth the time.
