I was very excited to finally be visiting Glass Beach. When we arrived I was expecting to see beach areas covered in sea washed glass as photos and past descriptions have alluded to. What I saw was beach areas covered with people and a very small area with sea glass in the sand. I imagine that much of the glass has been hauled off by tourists despite signs asking that the glass not be removed. People were walking away with bags of glass. I was very disappointed.
Awesome place to go and experience. The glass is from an old dump that used to sit there. I only know this from talking to locals, there is no sign of any kind of dump there now, except maybe a large piece or two of bent, rusted steel, and the most beautifully colored, completely smooth pieces of glass, all along the beach. Take the trail to the left, the harder trail. The trail to the right is easy to walk, but you wont see near as much glass to the right. Saw a baby sea lion, (the little cute white ones) on a rock close by at my last visit.
Nice enough but unfortunately the amount of sea glass you'll find is rather limited as other visitors seem to have taken most of it home with them (why you'd do that I don't know as the last thing I'd want to take home with me is a suitcase with bits of old glass rattling around in it).
Where is all the glass, I lived in Fort Bragg for 20 years. There was glass and lots of it. Took my friend from Sacramento to see Glass Beach, which is advertised in many places. How disappointing for my friend, should not even be advertised anymore because it is not Glass Beach, where is the Glass?????
Don't get too excited by the pretty pictures of this beach. It's a small segment of a beach, not an entire beach, and it isn't as pretty as the picture. You have to be able to walk down uneven, sandy n sometimes slippery downslope to get there n walk up. Not for the elderly w any knee issues. Much better view is at Santa Cruz, Carmel or even from Alioto's Restaurant located at Fisherman's Wharf....
Hi during low tide to check out the tide pools. So many cool things to see. We saw crabs and fish and seal basking in the sun. It’s kinda cool to see the old car parts embedded in the rocks too. And the glass is really pretty but wear good shoes because there are still some pieces that are sharp.
