Set in Koyasan, 37 km from Kishi Station and 44 km from Matsushita Park, 高野山 こころの寺子屋リトリートハウス -Koyasan Retreat House IKKOSHO offers accommodation with free WiFi and access to a garden. The retreat was just as expected—simple, clean, and peaceful. The owner is one of the nicest people I’ve met and leads optional guided meditations in the morning, which were a highlight.

Located in Nachikatsuura, 10 km from Nachikatsuura Sports and Cultural Center and 11 km from Hirou Shrine, みなみ野フィールズ不動坂 offers a terrace and air conditioning. Wonderfully charming mountain cottage. The cottage itself has everything a visitor needs — comfortable futons, good shower and bathroom, kitchen and, most importantly, a deck that looks out across the mountains to the sea. We visited on a hot August day, but the cottage enjoyed a fresh breeze that immediately cooled us off. I would highly recommend the cottage.

Situated 23 km from Kumanoshi Kiwakozan Museum in Shingu, Koguchi Village by WhyKumano features accommodation with air conditioning and free WiFi. A buffet breakfast is available at the lodge. Lovely, modern, wooden building that was a perfect respite in Koguchi. Our host also made an amazing Japanese traditional steamed meal, and a real spread for breakfast. Shared bathroom was surprisingly not an issue in any way. No in terms of waiting, nor in terms of hygiene. Though I suppose that depends on fellow guests as well, as realistically the host can't be cleaning up immediately after every guest, so we were lucky. We didn't use it but there is a bath as well.

It is an old style house, so as long as you aren't expecting Western/modern comforts, it's fantastic! My daughter called it the Totoro house. You will sleep on Japanese futons that you lay out on the tatami mats - if you've never slept on a futon it might feel uncomfortable/hard compared to Western beds. You will eat sitting on the tatami mats, but there are a couple of small Western chairs if sitting on the floor is difficut. The bathroom is Japanese style with the toilet in one section, the sink/vanity in a second section and the shower with separate furo (deep bathtub for soaking after washing in the shower) in the third section. It was not the most modern but all clean and more spacious than the Western hotel bathrooms we had other parts of Japan! There is a TV, wifi worked great and a bluetooth speaker to play music. There aren't a lot of "tourist" attractions nearby but it you want serenity this hits the spot - a few steps away has you walking among farming fields and the house is also close to the forest with a little stream running along side the road making for a peaceful but easy walk up the mountain. The gohan (rice) cooked in the old style stove was the best we ate our entire trip! Wish we had bought some of the local rice. It can get a little smoky when dinner is being cooked but my mild asthma was fine. The host, Hiro, is amazing, super accomodating and friendly, he introduced us to his shiba inu (dog) and his duck, and even though we didn't ask ahead, he prepped for us to make tofu - this experience was an extra fee but totally worth it! During the winter you can also request mochitsuki (pounding rice into mochi) and summer/fall you can make noodles (can't remember if he said soba, ramen or udon). Hiro's English is limited, but he's so engaging, we asked him to eat dinner with us and my daughter loved that...he has such good energy!

Yusuke and the whole staff were extremely helpful and accommodating, even offering a shuttle to and from Koyasan twice per day. Beautiful valley. there is a bridge that allows you to get down to the rivers edge to enjoy the water.

Featuring mountain views, Tamayura no Sato in Kimino features accommodation, a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, a garden, a terrace and a restaurant. This was a nice place away from the city. They have bbqs where you can grill outside of your cabin. Comfortable cabins close to some cool stuff to see. Friendly staff.

I really enjoyed the private access Onsen, available to sign up once a day. Perfect after biking around Kushimoto all day—I rented one of their electric assist bikes which made going up and down the local hills easier. Complete with helmet and cell phone holder. The room was very spacious and comfortable.
