Situated in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra Expedition Lodge provides accommodation with air conditioning and access to a garden. The property has mountain and river views. Our first stop in Sumatra was at Lilly's Guesthouse, where we were very warmly welcomed by her and her husband Ishako. From the first moment we felt welcome and completely at home. We booked a two-day jungle trek. Our adventure began on the second day after our arrival, together with our guide Iman and a French couple, Carolane and Romain. There was immediately a nice click, and so we trekked into the jungle together. Blood, sweat, but no tears - what an experience! Without Iman, the trek would definitely not have been the same. What a top guy! After two days of trekking and a night's sleep in the middle of the jungle, we arrived safely back at the guesthouse. How happy we were to finally shower again and sleep in a comfortable bed! As icing on the cake, we also enjoyed a wonderful massage - how good that felt! After that we wanted to travel on to Lake Toba, and coincidentally that was also Lilly's plan with her family. Transportation was completely arranged by them, and together we traveled to our next destination. Along the way, we had lunch together, took the same ferry and once again shared beautiful, enjoyable moments. In Tuktuk our paths parted, as we had each booked our own guesthouse, but we met up a few more times. Each time it was a warm reunion! What we really want to say: we felt like one of them. I recently stayed alone at “Mila Homestay.” From the moment I arrived, I experienced the extraordinary hospitality of the homestay's owner and manager, Dila and her husband, Michel. I arrived rather late that day, because my flight from Jakarta was delayed. I was immediately offered a complimentary dinner with martabak, which of course I gladly accepted. The room I stayed in was not very large, but comfortable with good air conditioning, stable and strong wifi, and a bathroom with hot water. Mila Homestay is located a bit on the outskirts of Padang, but that didn't matter because it was actually enjoyable to take a morning walk in the rice fields and local villages behind the homestay. I will definitely stay at Mila Homestay again if next time I go to Padang!

Beautiful location right on the river, surrounded by nature and beautiful views, a retreat from the busy-ness of town. It is only a short motorbike ride into town, and you can walk ~10 mins to get to an alfamart/indomaret. I did 2 days jungle trekking with Andi who was a great guide. We saw lots of orangutans and other wildlife, and he shared a lot of great information about the jungle. I went with a group and he was very attentive with the guests and everyone's different needs and comfort levels with the hiking. Dika, Dedek, and the rest of the family were so friendly and happy to answer any questions or help with anything, and make an amazing breakfast which is included. Andi arranged a car to and from the airport. Wifi was functional most of the time, which was helpful because I spent a lot of time working remotely in the restaurant. Bed in my room was very firm and comfortable, which is important to note because some different guesthouses where I've stayed have had very squishy, sinking beds. Bathroom has good showerhead water pressure, a western style toilet, and bidet. They provide toilet paper if needed. Towels also provided. Screens on windows prevent mosquitos from getting inside, and there is a fan inside the room for when it gets hot. Overall, a beautiful place to stay and a family business that makes you feel like family. Highly recommend!
