Our three-night stay at Matraville Homestay was a very welcome change-of-pace after jungle treks and volcano hikes in Bukit Lawang and Berestagi. Our unit was VERY large (it would have easily suited a family of four) and well-appointed with a TV, fridge, sink and kettle for use. It was also spread over two levels, with the downstairs serving as the entrance/living room area/kitchenette, and the bedroom and bathroom/separate shower area upstairs. BONUS(ES): the unit entrance featured a little patio with a table and chair where you could have an early-morning coffee or tea while facing the sunrise; the upstairs level also provided a small balcony area to take in the morning sun or evening dusk. While the room we chose was across the street from the water (a 90-second walk at most, down a couple of shallow flights of steps, and therefore didn’t provide a direct waterfront view), there are two rooms available in another portion of the property that face the water and are just steps from it. Our excellent Host, Dimmer, picked us up from the Tuk Tuk ferry landing (and can also drop you off when you depart) and will provide you with everything you might need to make your stay comfortable, including tips on places to eat or have coffee nearby and suggestions for what to do/see on Samosir Island. He will also provide scooters for daily/multi-day use for very reasonable rates.

We loved our hostess Tia and the other people who work at Rambai Tree Jungle Lodges, they we're all so helpful and friendly. We also enjoyed to be a little more secluded as the lodge is up between the trees, but still in walking distance of everything you need. The accommodation also had a good restaurant!

Very nice, modern, clean, comfortable room. Tasty versatile brekkie. Super nice host who helped us a lot. We ended up visiting the homestay three times between two trips outside of Padang. Besides the basic services of the stay the host took us shopping, helped to get a working Indonesian sim card for me, took us to a holiday lodge outside of Padang, took us back to Padang and in the end to airport. Very social personality. Speaks fluent English. For sure next time we visit Padang we'll stay here 😊
