When my driver edged up the narrow-inclined driveway of this very modern home, I didn’t know what to expect. But Pearle and her husband Ranjan greeted me with broad smiles and open arms. After they had retired, they built this sophisticated home on their family’s property. Since the terrain of Matale is mostly mountainous, their home is perched up high on a small hill, allowing a beautiful view of the city from their wide terrace. Communication was swift and efficient as their daughter fielded email questions from the UK. English was spoken perfectly by all members of the family, so no worries for any miscommunication. I had arrived in the late afternoon and Pearle offered me tea. Ranjan returned with some short eats and we sat around chatting. The conversation was easy and I felt like I was visiting good friends for the afternoon. My room was located just off their living room with an adjacent bathroom with contemporary fixtures – it felt like I was in a fancy hotel! The stylish room with extremely high ceilings was spacious and tastefully decorated with an enormous mosquito net tied with ribbons around the large four poster bed. There is a portable air conditioner/fan which was not really needed as the evenings are usually cool and temperate. Breakfast was a luxurious feast with red rice string hoppers, potato curry, dal, green gram and a delicious, spicy chicken curry. Watermelon, pineapple, and sweet juicy papaya from their garden rounded out the meal. After retirement, Pearle turned her interests to cooking and she is certainly an accomplished cook! My only regret was staying only one night and will certainly come back for a longer visit!

The team made our stay unforgettable a huge thank you to Chef Dilshan for the most amazing meals of our trip (especially the rice & curry), and to Dinuka and Lakmal, who looked after us with such warmth and professionalism. We also enjoyed a wonderful private garden tour and a fantastic day trip to the Knuckles Mountains with Bandar, arranged by the hotel. If you want a place that’s authentic, quiet, beautifully renovated and full of heart don’t miss Coldagh Manor. It’s a true hidden gem and deserves to be fully booked.

This was truly a special and unforgettable stay. The place is simple yet absolutely stunning – a beautiful structure immersed in greenery, with breathtaking views over the mountains. A real hidden gem where nature and peace surround you completely. The owner is a wonderful person, incredibly kind and welcoming. He’s also a wildlife photography enthusiast – and truly talented! I honestly believe he should publish his work – his shots are amazing. Dinner was delicious and beautifully prepared, and the whole team was so kind and thoughtful. They even waited for us until late, as my girlfriend wasn’t feeling well, just so we could still enjoy our meal when she felt better. That kind of care is rare to find. A magical place with beautiful people. We left with full hearts (and full bellies!). Highly, highly recommended.

Everything was amazing: the food, the amazing service with Jason in charge (best so far in Sri Lanka) and the great guide Charaka who accompanied us to a small trek in the jungle with my 3 years old son. The bungalows are clean, the beds are comfy and there is everything you need - if they don’t have already in the room, you ask and they find a solution! The views are incredible! We spent Christmas there, they went all the way into creating a Christmas tree with lights on the heliport so we could have dinner around it - a special barbecue. The food is also a fair price for the quality you get.

Additionally, the view from the place was incredibly interesting. We were treated to vistas of mountains, paddy fields, and pristine natural environments. It truly felt like a natural and green heaven, offering a serene and calming atmosphere. Staying here felt like a form of meditation, enhancing the relaxation and rejuvenation of our vacation. Overall, our stay at A Frame Riverston was nothing short of magical, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a peaceful retreat amidst stunning natural beauty.

Really calming and beautiful environment. It was built in a totally different concept than other accommodations I stayed. Rooms are comfortable and clean. Has all the facilities tv,wifi kitchen and etc. I mostly like the concept and beautiful environment it was build on. And uncle and aunty who look after the place are really nice and i have great respect for their superb hospitality. They treated us like family unlike guests.

We enjoyed a superb breakfast and dinner, and we especially loved the cookery demonstration. The trekking experience and the views were amazing. Kevin, our tuk-tuk driver, was very friendly and made us feel safe throughout the journey. We wanted to buy Sri Lankan spices, and he took us to authentic places with genuine products. The property was very clean and charming. The lady who manages the place was lovely and always helpful. We will definitely be back next year.
