We absolutely love the atmosphere of this place. The old wood panel walls and the giant logs that make up the frame in the lobby, have a rustic charm that leaves us relaxed and feeling like we’re somewhere overseas. I’m not a huge fan of jazz, but I love the sound of it in the lobby coming through through the old warm speakers near the fireplace. The food is another plus about this place. I’m not a huge fan of super fancy and pretentious food. What they serve here is good and substantial so you’re not left craving something else in 20 minutes. for dinner we actually got lunch items. We probably could have gotten away with ordering two lunch entrées for the three of us because they’re that filling. The buffet breakfast was fantastic. Unlike the buffet at a business hotel where you’re looking for something that’s the least unappealing to eat, for this buffet there were so many things that looked so good that it was a challenge not to overheat actually we skip lunch this afternoon because we ate so much at breakfast today.

Yamagata Zao Pension Apron Stage is a 3-star property set in Kaminoyama. It offers free WiFi, ski-to-door access, a garden and a restaurant. This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.

Located 39 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Daichan Farm Guest House offers 2-star accommodation in Asahi-machi and features free bikes, a garden and a shared lounge. I had a great time at Daichan Farm. I felt very welcomed and was provided everything I needed. I ordered breakfast and it was super delicious. Would recommend staying here again!

Located in Zao Onsen, 300 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Yoshidaya has ski-to-door access, private parking and rooms with free WiFi access. Super charming small ryokan in great location from the bus terminal (5 min walk) as well as all the onsens. The staff were so kind and amazing. Chigusa at the front desk is easy to communicate as her English is very good and she was so helpful in guiding me through the map of all the onsens. The cleaning staff also so warm. Also the onsen is 24-hrs so that was great for me because I arrived around 8pm. Loved the breakfast and I was shocked when a whole rice cooker was placed on the table just for me. It was a great first time experience to Zao Onsen area and I hope I can find a way to come back again.

This place is large for 6 ppl with 6 big suitcases. It is same as the photos provided, clean and beautiful. Also well-equipped.

GUEST HOUSE BLUE DOORS - Vacation STAY 73130v is located in Yamagata. The property is non-smoking and is situated 17 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. The host cared about us during our 4-night stay, offering advice on food choices and being supportive! He even gave us a watermelon before we checked out! Although it’s not so big as expected, it is carefully designed, a big TV screen, a small kitchen, Netflix, a washing machine.

Providing a restaurant and a bar, Lodge Scole is located in Zao Onsen, not far from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. Complimentary WiFi is provided and private parking is available on site. We really liked the environment/vibe of this place. The staff were also great and super helpful. The location is very close to the Jupeer and the breakfast in the morning was delicious. The rooms were super spacious and comfortable.
