We had a wonderful stay at Mackenzie Beach Resort in the Airstream trailer. The beach access nearby made the sunset walks at the beach so easy. The hot tub was a great bonus, and it was our first time camping in a trailer, so it was fun getting the full RV experience. The twinkling lights in the evening made the whole place feel extra cozy and relaxing.

Lovely coffee shops and seaside park.

Lovely coffee shops and seaside park. But using a car and disabled it was difficult to find car route to seaside. We found 2 hour free parking available near The Vault restaurant and cafe with its excellent food and fun atmosphere. The map on my phone helped a lot. Asteras Greek restaurant has fabulous food and great service. You can access a side door rather than using stairway. It is popular so be sure to reserve.

Charming, and interesting. We drove, but it was good to see a free shuttle. Our time was brief, and the main objective was to spend as much time with family, who had come from far away. The four teens loved 🏄‍♂️and cycling.Lots of interesting things to see and do.I suggested some things, but the boys were keen to surf, which was fine.I live within 3 hrs drive,so definitely want to return.I loved the Hobson Art Gallery etc.Ate at a Mexican trailer, but the food was 👍.Mostly ate at daughter’s campsite next door to LBL..

Port Hardy is quite small, but it has the necessities you might need. There is a Save-On-Foods near the hotel, as well as a pharmacy and even a Dollar store. You will also find a McDonald's and an A&W nearby. If you are staying at the hotel, I would recommend the attached Pub. It's very good and has a good, varied menu. San Joseph Bay is a must-see trip. It's beautiful! The 62km road is a well-graded active logging road as far as Holberg. We did not find the logging trucks to be a problem. A few empty trucks passed us on the way up; on the return, we did not see any. The trailhead to the bay is 16km further. It's an easy 45-min to 1-hr walk to the bay through a beautiful forest. Another day trip is Port Alice. This is a very pretty town at the end of a long inlet. It's an easy 30km drive on a paved road. In Port Alice, you will find a pleasant waterfront walk with lovely views of the inlet, a great coffee shop, a neat gift shop with local crafts, as well as other amenities. Along the way coming or going, Marble River Provincial Park has a nice 8km trail to some waterfalls should you want some exercise. The trail is not difficult and can be done in about 2 hours. When you get back to your hotel, you will have had a good day!

Had bonding time with my sister-in-law and our nieces at Beautify Nail Salon, a great experience! Stayed at The Tide's Inn. Would stay there again! Next time I will take advantage of their fire pit, popcorn, and mini-putt. And they're proximity to Parksville Beach and boardwalk.

Port Alberni is not the lumber town I remembered from 1978,...

Port Alberni is not the lumber town I remembered from 1978, which is to be expected. This time around, June 2026, the area does not seem economically vibrant. Back in 1978 and earlier to 1972 the lumber industry was going full blast. Not, not so. What changed? To add to the economic downturn, from what I have heard on this trip, about five years ago the Canadian Government (Prime Minister Trudeau?) decided to get rid of the free standing lumber mills on Vancouver Island because of CO2 emissions. The localized lumber mills were powered by stream derived from using wood as fuel. Question: how may cars were equivalent to the pollution caused by stream engines taken off-line? Though Port Alberni does not have the better economy, it is a great location from which to explore many areas of Vancouver Island by roads and from its access to the Pacific Ocean seaboard of the Island.
