Puntarenas is a little dirty compared to American beach towns, Also a little surprised at how expensive Costa Rican is in general, but still a great place to visit. The people we encountered were friendly, but but Puntarenas had quite a few homeless people.Puntarenas to me is only a place to stay as you continue your journey to other locations.
The town is dirty and rough. Our hotel staff recommended a restaurant, but the tuna we were served was tough and overcooked. Next time we will try to go straight to the ferry and not spend the night in Puntarenas.
We travelled all over Costa Rica for 12 days. Puntarenas was our LEAST favorite location. The beaches are full of trash and the buildings are all run down. There appears to be a lot of poverty in the area and few things for outsiders to do. It is mostly residential and hard to find restaurants or sodas, except at the very end of the peninsula. Though we kept our room there for both nights, we decided to drive to nicer locations like Monteverde and Playa Hermosa. If you like polluted beaches and being offered cocaine and prostitutes, Puntarenas is right for you!
quiet community, some good food choices, friendly people, basic sandy beach. (less hectic than montezuma nearby). one downside is extremely rough gravel road for an hour or so (the rest is paved) , for those like us travelling south on the Nicoya peninsula. ferry from puntarenas likely a better choice.
Puntarenas is a quaint little town with a lot of charm. It isn't the typical tourist town like you would expect. This town is where the Ticos from San Jose and the surrounding area go to the beach. The cost is less than the more common beach towns. In town, the streets are one way, which is helpful with the way that folks stop on the road. The beach is wide open and not built up. There are a few parks towards the western tip of the peninsula that have shades and parking. Because it is on a gulf or bay and not directly on the Pacific Ocean, the water is very murky. It is not crystal clear. But it wasn't dirty. The beaches were relatively clean. The roads are clean as they have men picking up trash on the streets. It is a nice place to make a quick trip to the beach and is very affordable, but I wouldn't recommend it for long term beach visits.
Puntarenas is an old port town with a long Paseo de las Turistas walkway along the water with street vendors, beach, hotels, cafes, and the ferries to go across the Golfo de Nicoya to the Nicoya Peninsula.
Puntarenas es ideal para caminar por la orilla del mar hasta el faro, con exquisitos restaurantes y bares por la zona, muy cerca de san jose , la gente es muy amable y no puede faltar ir por un Churchill !
Surfy chilled beach town surrounded by nature . Loved it.
Puntarenas is a small town, and it does small like fish a lot, but that being said, it was amazing. The locals were all very friendly, and the food was great. I don't eat seafood, but if you do, I'm pretty sure there are lots more options! It also had a busy nightlife, and fun atmosphere with the cruise ships that stopped at the pier twice a week. We were hear for New Years and the locals had a very cool show that they put on complete with dancers, and formal dinner, and an AMAZING drum performance by local kids. All in all an amazing experience!
Not the place to go if you want exhilarating nightlife or cultural standouts. If you want a good getaway amongst the locals and are an intrepid traveler Puntarenas worked just fine
Great location! 2 mn from the beach. Plenty of restaurants, shops, bars around. The hotel is very peaceful, decorated with taste with a nice pool and a beautiful garden. We had a big room on the first floor with garden view. The staff was very nice and helpful. Definitely a place to recommend ! It is also walking distance to the bus stop to San Jose and the bus line Puntarenas Quepos (Parc Manual Antonio) is right at the end of the street.
Puntarenas
Jasmine and her husband were absolutely wonderful. They really made me feel welcome. The apartment was spotless. Inside parking. It's not on the beach (near) and a 10 minute drive to Puntarenas, but I highly recommend staying here and using it as your base. The breakfast was delicious. Would definitely go back. Very good service and room for the price
Puntarenas
The property has all the essentials of a hotel without the price of a hotel. The place is within walking distance from the beach. We booked a tour within the property to go to Isla Tortuga, which was very good value for the price. The staff from Puntarenas Bed & Coffee are very customer oriented, helpful and friendly!
THIS IS ACTUALLY A REVIEW FOR PUNTARENAS BACKPACKERS, they moved me because there was no wifi in my room when i specifically asked for it. The room before i moved though was pretty dismal, musty and not really a hotel, just some rooms around some plants and some hammocks. Bed was comfy Good wifi Close to beach
Puntarenas is not one of Costa Rica's popular destinations. It is either a stop as you head to another destination or a budget destination as it is only one hour from San José. From that perspective, this place is perfectly located as itis 15 min from the ferry dock and 15 min from the major higjways.
Santa Elena, Monteverde Costa Rica
They staff was very kind! The breakfast consisting of vegan pancakes and fruits was delicious. The hostel itself was cosy and had all that was needed We could book tours via the hostel and the staff helped us with busses to continue travels to San José / Puntarenas.
Everything here was first rate. Totally unexpected. In our dozens of trips to Costa Rica, we never had any desire to stay in the Puntarenas area. Due to the logistics on this trip, we found ourselves in the area. What a find! Hotel Cayuga was an oasis.
Paquera
this family owned hotel had a fantastic room for us. clean and comfortable. lots of space for our luggage and close to both the ferry to puntarenas and the carù reservation. the staff was really helpful!
The staff especially Gerardo and Andres are amazing. Best Hotel I have stayed in by far. We stayed in a resort in Puntarenas after we left and we desperately wanted to come back. Will be back for sure!
Our flight into San Jose was delayed, and we missed the Puntarenas ferry. Hotel La Punta was the perfect spot to spend the night after a long day of travel, before getting on the ferry in the morning.
Jacó
The location is top notch. Two of the most beautiful beaches in Puntarenas at walking distance. Playa Blanca is simply breathtaking. The staff is also extremely helpful and friendly.
Excellent location, Good facilities, lovely A la carte restaurants. Being vegetarian we were very well looked after.
I love the privacy of the room, the jacuzzi, the view, and every single detail in the room, it's obvious to me that great attention has been put to the architectural design of the hotel and particularly the junior suite in which we stayed. The beach was a nice surprise, didn't have idea there was access to a private beach.
The view, breakfast was wonderfull
The size of the room, pool, cocktails, staff, and nearby activities were great. The sunsets were great and there was on-site photography team (at extra cost) that really helped make our honeymoon special.
Villa Lapas is a wonderful place to stay Every aspect of the resort is topnotch. The staff are great. All aspects of the lodge are well coordinated. It all works. The food is great the birding is very good.
Location was very close to nature and still we had all facilities.
Excellent amenities, restaurants, casino and pool
The environment was peaceful and felt like home. The staff was accommodating and so friendly.
