This place truly exceeded my expectations! Douglas and Daria are incredibly warm and welcoming hosts, both with a very calm and soothing energy. Douglas helped organize trips and shuttles, making everything easy and stress-free. Daria is always happy to assist and loves sharing her knowledge about the local fauna and flora. They have a wonderful team: four sisters who prepare incredibly flavorful, fresh dishes every day, and Victoria, whose vibrant personality makes guests feel completely at home (she also makes amazing margaritas!). Every day at 4PM, Douglas takes Oso, their lovely dog, on his daily ‘walk’ on the barking boat. Don’t miss this because it’s unique and so much fun! They also own a gentle black cat named Pedro. The other guests were great company as well. We even went on a day trip together, and in the evenings we shared dinners followed by long after-dinner conversations and games. I stayed in the little hut above the dock. It can get a bit humid and there are some bugs, but that’s part of the ‘camping’ vibe, or rather glamping. The view from the hut is amazing! There are also plenty of cozy communal spaces to relax. Overall, it felt like a warm and familiar experience. It was a perfect and relaxing way to end my holidays in Guatemala, and exactly the reason why I chose to book this place.

Slow travel hits different, unplanned, I immersed myself in the culture, people and atmosphere of a special place called Finca Tatin, deep in the jungle, an hour lancha boat ride from Rio Dulce City. We also chugged downriver through the picturesque El Cañón del Río Dulce to Livingston, passing lodges, schools, private houses, pelican and cormoran colonies and shipwrecks, to arrive to this small, ramshackle town, on Guatemala’s Caribbean coast, at the mouth of the river, where no roads leads to it. There is poverty everywhere, and life can clearly be challenging, but there is this relaxed, Caribbean vibe and friendly and welcoming people, a haven for people fleeing oppression: especially the Garifuna and the Q’echi Maya.

It was so great to sit on the balcony and see all the birds (Pelicans and many others) arrive for the night around sunset. We were amazed on both days that we stayed. Additionally, the hotel is decorated nicely, with several cosy places to sit and the pool is nice too.

Rio Dulce isn't a posh town.

Rio Dulce isn't a posh town. There is a bridge over the river and therefor it is a crossroads where local people meet to sell and buy stuff. The Main Street (heading to the bridge) is like an open market and always very busy. There are some restaurants, but not a lot of choice. But you may of course love this kind of places with a lot of people movement, as we do. If you want to blend in with the locals a bit, it sure is great. A lot of backpackers stop over here. It is also a bus stop between Guate and Tikal. The hotels are around the river and lake and you may have to go there by lancha (boat) it works out fine if you communicate a bit with the locals. But then you can feel trapped in the hotel also as you will have to take the lancha again to go to the town. The hotels have a lancha themselves but it still needs organising a bit upfront.

First place in Guatemala where the people are open-minded...

First place in Guatemala where the people are open-minded and interested in you. Actually wanna have conversations and not a hussle culture like everywhere else in Guatemala. We felt very safe even way into the night. Lots to do, way more than just Playa Blanca and Siete Altares. Garifuna Culture is worth exploring!

Rio Dulce is a wonderful place to visit.

Rio Dulce is a wonderful place to visit. I stayed at Tortugal hotel, which provides a river view and a jungle view. Castillo de San Fellip is a small fortress. It is not necessary to go inside. Cataratas de Aguas Termales (hot spring water fall) is one of the best places to escape from the heat. Livingston is one hour away by boat. The hotel arranged the tour. You may take a boat from the municipal dock. The boat leaves at 9:30AM.

Chris and wife Heidi have created a little gem in the rough.

Chris and wife Heidi have created a little gem in the rough. Really nice grounds, beach and pier to lounge on. Nice restaurant to enjoy the evening winds. We ate dinner there every night which was delicious. Livingston is a place that grows on you. It's a little gritty and dirty but Nirvana was just that. Nirvana.

It is a great trip to Livingston.

It is a great trip to Livingston. The area on the shores of Rio Dulce is much more built up than I expected. It has become a cruise sailing mecca. Great fauna and flora. Be ready that occasional showers happen and you will be soaked! The trip is much more worthwhile than the destination...

Loved Livibgston.

Loved Livibgston. It has a very chilled and relaxed vibe that's very different to the rest of Guatemala. The locals are so warm and welcoming. We ate at local restaurants and sometimes local drummers came in and played which was great.very easy to get around. If you don't want to walk there's always a tuk tuk near by for only 50Q a person. The area is great for walking along the coast, kayaking, and enjoying different cultures.
