FAQs about hotels in Val Gardena

Dream Valley of the Dolomites

Situated between 1,250 and 1,550 metres above sea level, Val Gardena is part of the South Tyrol region of Italy. The Gardena River runs alongside it, surrounded by the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Dolomites. Populated by a Latin-speaking majority, its fabric mixes Austrian and Italian traditions.

Sasso Lungo Mountain (3,181 metres) is probably one of the most iconic symbols of the valley, while the Puez-Odle Natural Park also includes some of the highest peaks of the valley. A large part of Val Gardena hotels are in Selva, precisely because the town is located between the Sasso Lungo and the Park. Ortisei and Santa Cristina are the other 2 towns in the valley.

Val Gardena is also celebrated for the quality of its handcraftsmanship, particularly for the woodcarvers specialised in religious statuary. Nonetheless, it counts with beautiful refuges and restaurants located in the mountains, offering delicious meals accompanied with breath-taking views.

But it’s during winter that the valley offers its most renowned side: Val Gardena’s ski facilities are some of the best of Europe. The very fast Saslong World Cup track or the Sella Ronda are legendary.

I like breakfast provided by the hotel with vast varieties of food to choose from as well as the dinner with three good options to choose from. I particularly like the location which is right in front of the bus stop for buses to/from Bolzano. And the morning mail on my dining table which provides weather forecast for the day and following two days as well as programs for the day and suggestion where to visit in the vicinity like South Tyrol Museum of Natural History. Finally, I enjoyed excursion with the hotel guide Lukas who accompanied me to take cable car to both Seceda and Alpe di Siusi on the first day as well as visiting Passo Giau on the following day and many other places with magnificent views!

This hotel is beautiful, the location for exploring the dolomites is fantastic. We couldn’t have asked for any more, friendly staff, great facilities and the food was lovely. The information providing about the surrounding area and the free local bus pass to make moving around effortless. Thank you for a great week in the Dolomites.

The only truly positive experience during the stay was the Michelin-star restaurant. Both the food and the service there were excellent. It is a pity that such a high-quality restaurant operates within a hotel where the rest of the service falls significantly short of expectations.

A wonderful experience staying at this property. The photos don’t do the place justice with their amenities and mountain views. It was a very relaxing place to return after a day of hiking. Make sure you take advantage of the sauna, and the outdoor spas and pools.

Ortisei is a beautiful, spotlessly clean and wonderfully well-kept town, full of colourful flowers, lovely shops and excellent restaurants. It has a great atmosphere and feels very safe for an evening stroll, while during the day there’s so much to see and do. A fantastic place for families and the perfect base for exploring the Dolomites, with incredibly easy access to the mountains.

Of course.

Of course. Your original text has a lovely personal feeling, so I’d keep that rather than making it sound like a generic travel review. I’d polish it like this: Santa Cristina in Val Gardena was a wonderful place to stay, and I’m so glad I chose it. It is a relatively small and peaceful village, perfectly located between Ortisei and Selva di Val Gardena. Accommodation also seemed more affordable than in Ortisei, which was another advantage. Although Santa Cristina doesn’t have as many shops or restaurants as Ortisei or Selva, it has everything you need, and I really enjoyed the quieter atmosphere. I especially loved the beautiful mountain views and falling asleep at night listening to the sound of the river. The weather was fantastic throughout my stay. I had brought jackets and warmer trousers expecting cooler mountain weather, but I hardly needed them! One of my favourite things was the old railway path connecting Santa Cristina with Ortisei and Selva. It is beautiful and incredibly useful for walking, running and cycling, with lovely views along the way. I explored many of the little towns and villages around the Dolomites and absolutely loved the whole area. The public transport is excellent too, with very regular buses making it easy to reach different places and trailheads for hiking, trail running or cycling without needing a car. I travelled here as a solo female traveller and hiker and had an amazing experience. I felt very comfortable exploring the area independently and loved the freedom of being able to access so many beautiful places by foot and public transport. I will definitely be back. Next time I would love to do even more hiking and trail running — and bring my bike to explore the Dolomites on two wheels! 🏔️🥾🏃‍♀️🚴‍♀️ Santa Cristina was a perfect base for me: peaceful, beautiful, well connected and surrounded by incredible mountains.

If you want to choose a spot to stay in for sights in western Dolomites, look no further. This is a beautiful village, large enough to have all amenities but small enough to keep charm at top level. Only 15 min drive from Ortisei and the main hiking highlights or Passo di Gardena.

The best way to get round santa cristina is by walking. The bus to Ortisei or Selva was 15 minute walk from our apartment. One day we walked to Monte Pana and took the chair lift up the mountain. My daughter really enjoyed the zipline.

Selva di Val Gardena is a charming little mountain village...

Selva di Val Gardena is a charming little mountain village and an excellent base for exploring the Dolomites. While the village itself is relatively small, it has everything you need, including restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, and outdoor gear shops. The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with countless hiking and mountain biking trails for all skill levels. We traveled by car, so our focus was on visiting the main scenic viewpoints and mountain passes, which were all easily accessible from Selva. Even with a short stay, we were able to experience some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the region. If you're looking for a convenient and peaceful headquarters to discover the Dolomites, Selva di Val Gardena is a fantastic choice.

We loved the easy access to various cable cars and lifts to nearby mountains and hiking destinations. After exploring those, the bus system pass included as part of our stay gave us access to the local villages for more opportunities. Santa Cristina is smaller and quieter than the more popular and touristy Ortisei, which we appreciated. We ate at a local restaurant and bought food from the local grocery store to save money for some of our meals.
