Florence is a truly beautiful city, bursting with history, art, culture and incredible architecture. Every corner seems to tell a story, from the magnificent Duomo to the charming streets, historic palaces and world-famous museums. It is a city that leaves you constantly amazed and wanting to discover more. The only drawback is the number of scammers and aggressive street sellers in some of the more touristy areas, which can sometimes take away from the experience. Nevertheless, Florence is an unforgettable destination and a must visit for anyone who appreciates art, history and culture.

It is a small city that you can easily discover in two days. The attractions do not have long queues. The negative is the cleanliness of the center, where in some places they should have paid more attention. The positive and that is why we chose it as a base for our vacation is that it is located almost in the center of Tuscany.

We just happened to be there when they had 2 nights of (free) concerts at Il Campo. Hearing Rhapsody in Blue during dinner at the square was a highlight of our 3 week Italy trip. It was quite hot (upper 90s). Would recommend the packaged tickets to allow access to mulitple museums all close to each other. The Medici Fort was not too far away. A great place to view the sunset while strolling the battlements. There are also food and drinks there. It is where the locals go! A great place for an evening out.

Lucca is a small gem of Tuscany if you ask me.

Lucca is a small gem of Tuscany if you ask me. Firenze is magnificent and it deserves all the praise it gets, but don't neglect Lucca. It will charm you with green ring of city walls around the historic core of the city, it will charm you with architecture of medeval times, with narrow streets and small squares. Torre Guinigi is amazing to climb, churches date from the 11 century and it really gives you a sense of appreciation of history of Europe. Have a drink or eat at the Piazza Anfiteatro, visit the Giacomo Puccini birth house... You have excellent rail connections to Pisa ( 3-4 times in an hour during the day), to Montecatini Terme, or to Firenze. I chose Lucca to be a starting piont on my family trip to Tuscany, and i did not regret it - Siena and San Gimignano were 90 minutes drive, La Spezia 45 minutes, Pisa 25 minutes, Firenze 50 minutes, Vinci (birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci) 60 minutes...

Hotel was a little too far from centre to walk into town (in the heat), so a car was needed and then parking was a challenge. But Livorno was well placed to use as a base to go into Pisa and visit other places.

THis is a really beautiful hill town in Tuscany.

THis is a really beautiful hill town in Tuscany. There is a bit of a walk to get there but once you are there, you will enjoy the pedestrian area. I enjoyed visiting the cathedral and just wandering. We had a lovely dinner at a restaurant whose name i can't remember - sorry - many nice restaurants - Lots of interesting medieval sites to explore. This is also a good jumping off spot for other hill towns in the area. You do have to park below so it is a bit of a steep walk to get to the town but worth it. This was one of my favorites in Tuscany.

An Elba Pass (bus pass)gives unlimited bus use for 1, 3 or 6 days and even if you have a car it gives you really good access to the island, stress-free and able to enjoy a few beers or glasses of wine! The Gourmet Food Court is great (wide selection of excellent food - I had the best Caesar salad of my life at the outlet that advertises itself as a pasta specialist(!). It is air conditioned superbly and underneath there is a shop that is one of those "we sell everything - and really cheap!" shops that is WELL worth a look (some great stuff in there). Do use the infoPark (Tourist Info) on the corner of Calata Italia and the bus station. They can give you a really good map and point out where the ATMs are (amongst other things, of course). For everyday stuff, I recommend the Coop Supermarket (InfoPark will point it out). Good range of stuff and good prices but don't expect to buy any over the counter medicines like aspirin or paracetamol like we do in England. Supermarkets don't stock it and you will have to try out your Italian at the Farmacia! I think you will love it.

Beautiful hilltop village. Lovely restaurants and bars nearby and some cater for gluten free options. Probably would hire a car next time but the bus service around the island is very reliable. Need to go to Portoferrio first for most destinations.
