Pisa is a really small city with not that many places to visit but still charming ! If this is the first place you visit during your trip in Toscany then you will like it and be impressed by all the monuments at the Piazza die Miracoli. But as a final destination after Firenze, Siena, and other place in Toscany Pisa will look "already seen" and small. Despite this, the Pisa Tower is of course a must to see ! The Santa Maria della Spina is really cute with the river and the river side on the background ! One day is enough to visit Pisa and if you are driving I suggest you to spend half a day in Pisa and drive until Lucca.
It was a delight visiting places especially on foot. The city appears to be divided into grids and while one expects a longer time for reaching destination, it is a pleasant surprise to find you reach destination before time. The food and the costs related thereto.. the ambiance and courtesy extended by the staff in most restaurants is typical Italian -- Muah-- Muah..
Good architecture even though it was a failed attempt to build a tower, yet it become one of the great wonders of architecture... Kids loved it since it was fun to watch a tilted tower and then pretending they are holding it in the pictures....
Travelled to Pisa for a short break and mostly for site seeing. The leaning tower was in itself an amazing experiance. Pictures do not do justice to seeing it in person. The Cathedral, Baptistry and Cemetery (Campo Santo) are a must vist. Churchs and monuments are scattered around the city and provide for a good walk. Shops aren't lacking with a good mix of brands for everyones tastes. Food is good, and look for traditional Tuscan restaurants "Osteria". Connections to Firenze, Lucca, Siena (through Empoli) and Livorno (great fish dishes) are easy by train from Pisa Central Station, which is half an hour on foot from the tower down the main "shopping street". This is a town that is a must to visit.
The only interesting attraction is really just the tower. And even that is really what you expect, just a leaning tower. But we had a great pizza near the tower, tasted the best, most creamiest ice cream ever (La Bottega del Gelato) there! And the city is lively, "studenty", but other than that, there's not much else to do.
Pisa is a nice place for a short visit. Most of the major sights are in the same area so easy to visit in a long afternoon. There are other worthwhile locations to see and if pressed you could see them in a morning, so a one day visit is feasible. Better to spread your stay over a couple of days and enjoy the food and shopping as well.
