Where to start? The location is premium, right in the center of Lucca. Staff is beyond friendly and wonderful. And then the ambiance: walls are handpinted murals (added some pics, mind you I was in a simple room. Can't fathom a suite)

We only stayed one night at Tenuta di Tramonte Boutique Hotel, but we truly wish we had stayed longer. Lorenzo was incredibly welcoming and communicative, making us feel right at home—as if we were part of his family. The estate itself is beautiful, producing its own wine and olive oil, and the garden provides fresh ingredients for the delicious meals served at the restaurant. It’s a perfect stop for visiting Lucca and Pisa, and we will definitely be back!

FAQs about hotels in Lucca

The Masterpiece of Puccini

Once Italy’s 2nd largest city state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognisable historic centre is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely ‘passeggiata’.

Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.

The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.

Roman amphitheatre remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More pavement restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini – the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.

Booking.com’s range of Lucca accommodation includes apartments, B&Bs and 5-star hotels. Properties are available near the train station, and some include swimming pools and parking.

Lucca has so much to offer, from historic buildings, several old pretty squares, lots of bars and restaurants to suit all purses, and, of course a long shopping road with everything from high end fashion to tourist outlets. We pre-booked a guide for a few hours before we arrived, and that was money well spent as we learned so much that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. The guide spoke excellent English. Food was the usual Italian fayre, which, always has something on the menu for everyone. The prices were reasonable, especially in the main square, which is actually oblong, but that's another, very interesting story, which our guide told us. Think Aperol spritz for 3 euros a glass....

Lucca is a small gem of Tuscany if you ask me.

Lucca is a small gem of Tuscany if you ask me. Firenze is magnificent and it deserves all the praise it gets, but don't neglect Lucca. It will charm you with green ring of city walls around the historic core of the city, it will charm you with architecture of medeval times, with narrow streets and small squares. Torre Guinigi is amazing to climb, churches date from the 11 century and it really gives you a sense of appreciation of history of Europe. Have a drink or eat at the Piazza Anfiteatro, visit the Giacomo Puccini birth house... You have excellent rail connections to Pisa ( 3-4 times in an hour during the day), to Montecatini Terme, or to Firenze. I chose Lucca to be a starting piont on my family trip to Tuscany, and i did not regret it - Siena and San Gimignano were 90 minutes drive, La Spezia 45 minutes, Pisa 25 minutes, Firenze 50 minutes, Vinci (birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci) 60 minutes...

What a beautiful place to visit.

What a beautiful place to visit. Perfect for a 2/3 night stay. So many piazzas ,churches and places to explore. We went kayaking on the river which was lovely. It was hot in july so be aware. Cycling the walls whilst hearing Puccini music being played, bliss.

Lucca is a very nice town that merits a two day trip.

Lucca is a very nice town that merits a two day trip. Maybe three, but then you have seen it all. There are many more places to eat than the obvious Piazza del Anfiteatro. Try to see past the many day tourists walking the streets. If you care for the best coffee, visit Piazza San Frediano, Caffé Santa Zita. Also order a small biscotto and visit the inside!

Lucca is stunning, so much history, with an array of small independent shops, restaurants and sightseeing attractions.we walked around the perimeter of the town and it was romantic and beautiful. You can hire bikes and italian ricksaws- I was with family during the day but they had to leave for their flight so in the evening I was alone- it felt safe and I wasn’t worried about my surroundings.

Lucca is an easy, walkable, and bike-friendly town.

Lucca is an easy, walkable, and bike-friendly town. You can walk or bike around the entire city on the wall that surrounds it. We rented e-bikes and went wine tasting...about a 30-minute ride into the countryside...easy to do. It is becoming touristy, but we also went in July during their music festival, so that was to be expected. If large Italian cities seem too stressful for you, Lucca is a good place to start your Italian adventure.

In our week long trip to Italy, this was our favourite! From the moment we arrived we were made to feel at home, the room was beautiful with everything we needed, comfy bed, lovely large bathroom, exceptionally clean, Breakfast in the little courtyard was wonderful and a huge selection to choose from. Staff are very knowledgeable about Lucca and recommended a beautiful restaurant for us for dinner that evening. We will be returning to Lucca and I will definitely be booking this hotel again next year.

Very good hotel in Lucca. Ideally placed just outside the town-walls with parking facility (saves the hassle to drive into the narrow city-streets). Possibility to use bikes for free to visit the city and have a ride on the city wall promenade. Very kind staff, explaining the must-sees in the city. Good breakfast. We had a family room for 4 people. Room and bathroom were very clean.
