Hotel Alla Corte degli Angeli 4 stars

Hotel in Lucca Centro Storico, Lucca

This warm and friendly hotel is within the ancient walls of Lucca, a 10-minute walk from the cathedral. Highlights at Hotel Alla Corte degli Angeli include free Wi-Fi and elegantly decorated rooms. Everything more than satisfactory. The fresh orange juice ..... super top. Regret not having tried their restaurant. We ended up in a very popular but disappointing place specialist in meat.

Albergo Celide 4 stars

Hotel in Lucca

Facing Lucca's famous Renaissance city walls, Albergo Celide is 1 km from San Martino Cathedral. The property offers free bike hire, free Wi-Fi and free parking. A lovely hotel in the perfect location opposite the walls of beautiful Lucca. All the staff were friendly and helpful and we were delighted to find a bottle of complimentary bubbles in our room to help two of us celebrate 60th birthdays. We had small double rooms which were cosy but well equipped with good size bathrooms. We knew they were small when we booked so no complaints. We would have chosen larger rooms but they were already taken. We'll book earlier next time. It takes just a few minutes gentle stroll to get inside (or on to) the walls of the city. The free bikes were a bonus. Breakfast was very good. Lovely fresh fruit and baked goods along with the usual continental cheeses and meats. They even have Twinings English Breakfast teabags! We will definitely stay at Albergo Celide when we return to lovely Lucca

Hotel Palazzo Alexander 4 stars

Hotel in Lucca Centro Storico, Lucca

Hotel Palazzo Alexander is a historic building in the centre of Lucca, with easy access from Porta San Donato. Rooms come with free Wi-Fi and air conditioning, and the staff is multilingual. The hotel was beautiful, just what you would expect a small Italian hotel / bed and breakfast to be like. Mario was wonderful to us, as I’m sure with all. He made us feel some welcome, helped give us ideas on things to do & restaurants to try. He and the staff made our week there super enjoyable!

Hotel San Marco 3 stars

Hotel in Lucca

Offering air-conditioned rooms, Hotel San Marco features a swimming pool. Lucca’s marvellous walls are 500 metres from the property and Porta San Jacopo are a short walk away. Parking is free. The free parking just in front of the building is very convenient since all parking spots around Lucca are expensive; very elegant lobby, the concierge went above and beyond in giving us advice in finding everything that was worthy of a visit during our stay. Breakfast was good, notwithstanding the hurdles brought by the very inconvenient anti-COVID regulations. The hotel is a very short stroll from one of the passages through the city walls so that visiting Lucca is very pleasant without having to worry about your car - or you can rent a bike directly at the hotel hall.

Palazzo Dipinto 4 stars

Hotel in Lucca Centro Storico, Lucca

Set in Lucca's historic centre, 650 metres from Piazza Anfiteatro, Palazzo Dipinto offers spacious rooms with free WiFi. Guests can enjoy the on-site bar. The hotel is great. The location is perfect, the room was clean and with a very nice view, and all the staff were super friendly and helpful. The hotel also has its own garage, which is very practical and indeed often essential in Lucca when arriving by car. We also loved the breakfast and the food in general, which had many healthy and organic choices.

The Masterpiece of Puccini

Once Italy’s 2nd largest city state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognisable historic centre is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely ‘passeggiata’.

Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.

The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.

Roman amphitheatre remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More pavement restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini – the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.

Booking.com’s range of Lucca accommodation includes apartments, B&Bs and 5-star hotels. Properties are available near the train station, and some include swimming pools and parking.
