Located among undulating meadows and Chianti vineyards, Siena shines as a jewel of the Tuscan Renaissance, and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience the famous Palio di Siena horse race, catch the pulse of the city at Piazza del Campo, visit the beautiful Duomo cathedral…and fall in love with this charming city!
Founded by Etruscans around 900 BC, the city was first conquered by Romans and later by Lombards. The Middle Ages saw it becoming the independent and flourishing Republic of Siena, until its annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The economic difficulties that followed turned out to be a blessing for the preservation of its historic centre. Adorned with frescoes by Ghirlandaio and bass-reliefs by Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Jacopo della Quercia, the Duomo represents the highest expression of this well-kept legacy. The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, with the Palazzo Pubblico and the Gaia Fountain, is still the heart and soul of the city. Follow the labyrinth of narrow streets and passages that irradiate from there and you will be enchanted by its romantic atmosphere from ancient times.
The closest airports are Peretola Airport in Florence and Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa, though Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna is also well connected. While planning your trip, don’t forget to check out the Siena accommodation deals on Booking.com!
I like ancient gates and Siena has great ones. Especially, Porta Romana was breathtaking. I wish I had seen all of them. And just walking around the famous spots was an excellent experience. Those spots are compactly situated. Also you can enjoy Toscana landscapes from the height of the old town.
Siena is absolutely magical! This was my second visit , and I still discovered a few secrets Walking is the only way to discover this beautiful city , so wear very comfortable shoes - you will need to climb a few hills! Many places to eat with local menus, but if you find one ask if you need to book in advance. Because most of the restaurants aren’t big, and have limited sitting
All the tuscany is marvelous. We stayed at Siena, but we traveled a lot around. All the towns and villages were marvelous: san Giminiano, massa maritimo, castegione della pescaia, Firenze, colle de Val DÈlsa, Pisa, Volterra, Arezzo.....I can´t tell wich is nicer....wonderfull streets, nice restaurants, the greatest gelaterias.....The arquitecture is impressive! You feel that if you are in a history tale... You can go from one to other in just an hour in car.
Siena is a "must see" in Italy! Its like travelling in time, back to the past! We had luck, because we could see "the palio" live! Great experience! You can visit the city walking - dont need a car.
Good for people wanting a relaxing getaway - six days was ample but I would advise giving thought on how you plan on getting to Tuscany as the long commute from Pisa (trains, coaches or taxi) has the potential to take the edge off of what is otherwise a beautiful escape. Excellent restaurants, the cathedral was stunning, surprisingly good shopping, wine tasting - a gem.
We were there for the Palio - a bucket list trip. I would highly recommend this event but take the time to take in all that goes along with the race itself. Siena is a beautiful old world charm city with friendly people, history and culture.
