My wife and I stayed at Bellavista Valmadrera over Easter for our anniversary, and it was truly a wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived, we felt warmly welcomed by the hosts, who were incredibly kind and attentive throughout our stay. The entire property was spotless—tidy, clean, and clearly well cared for. It’s a peaceful, quiet place that allowed us to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The breakfast was fresh and satisfying each morning, and we really enjoyed the restaurant connected to the hotel—it was a great touch having such quality dining right on site. The free and secure parking was a big plus, and the whole atmosphere made us feel right at home. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate our special occasion. Highly recommended.

Lake Como highlights

Soak up the sights of Lake Como by ferry

Hop on a ferry and visit Bellagio, Varenna and Como, some of the villages scattered along Lake Como’s pebbly shores.

Head to Isola Comacina, in the heart of Lake Como

This secluded island is northern Italy’s only olive-oil producing area. Explore its archaeology, nature and the Romanesque San Giocomo Church.

Step back in time and visit Villa del Balbianello

This 18th-century former monastery cuts a splendid shape on Lenno’s shores. Visit the gardens, or admire views over Lake Como.

Explore literary history in lakeside Lecco

Lecco has proved inspiration to writers, poets and artists and features as a backdrop to Manzoni’s novel "I Promesi Sposi”.

Explore Como’s sights away from the lake’s shores

Within Roman-built Como town sits a cathedral, Volta Temple Museum and the striking Villa Olmo, housing exhibitions and cultural events.

Fantastic views at sacred Sacro Monte di Ossuccio

Looking onto Lake Como from its 400-metre-high altitude, this religious site is surrounded by scenic woodland and olive groves.

Savour a taste of Lake Como

Fish, rice and cheese feature greatly in Como’s local cuisine. Try risotto with perch fillets or traditional Misultin fish.

FAQs about hotels in Lake Como

A Haven of Alpine Tranquillity

Surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Alps, Lake Como is a long, thin lake in the shape of an inverse ‘Y’. At its south-west corner is the beautiful town that it’s named after – Como. A short train ride from Milan, this is the starting point for several Lake Como cruises. If you take the funicular railway up to Brunate you get magnificent views of the lake and mountains, towards Switzerland just to the west.

The laidback and sophisticated way of life makes Como Lake popular with celebrities and several have homes in exclusive Bellagio, which is almost entirely surrounded by water. The views here are breathtaking, so it’s easy to see why of all the Lake Como hotels, Bellagio has the greatest concentration.

Just across the water are Lenno, Tremezzo and Menaggio, home to many exclusive lakefront hotels, many with swimming pools. You can actually swim in some parts of the lake, and the best beaches are found in the area near Gravedona in the north. Fanning out around a small harbour, this town offers some of the best Lake Como watersports.

At the lake’s south-eastern corner is Lecco, a town in the shadow of rugged mountains. Booking.com has a great range of apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Lecco and all the other main Lake Como towns.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo was absolutely outstanding. We felt like royalty from our arrival until our reluctant departure. It was first class, 5 star luxury 24/7. We spent 3 days & 2 glorious nights in an upgraded Terrace Garden Suite. This enormous 2 room, 2 bathroom suite accommodated our 17 year old daughter in a queen sofa bed, with a beautiful garden deck outside, & side deck with panoramic Lake Como views. It was private, palatial, & had every conceivable bathroom accessory, fully stocked fridge & pantry with snacks, & multiple Nespresso pods for whatever your coffee preference may be. The King bed was super comfortable, as were the fluffy soft towels & bathrobes. There even was a custom sewing kit with safety pins, multiple coloured threads, buttons etc amongst the multiple accessories inside the second wardrobe. Breakfast was an indulgent affair, which was leisurely, well staffed, and honestly the biggest choice & range of breakfast options imaginable. On top of this, there was the option of ordering whatever one desired, cooked to order. My personal favourite was the cereal options, (crazy I know) with so many additional condiments to add - it was like being in a candy store. I cannot even begin to rave about the enormous cheese options, as well as numerous spreads, fruits, hams & delicious pastries to die for. I thought we would skip lunch given the 7 course breakfasts, but with so many restaurant options & jaw dropping views to enjoy, we managed to wine & dine the afternoons & evenings away in awe of the ever changing views & absolute beauty of the hotel. The fitness centre is across 3 floors, with cardio equipment first, strength training 2nd, & the best equipped functional fitness I've ever seen on the 3rd floor. It was the perfect way to try & reverse the indulgences from the previous days. We also made good use of the heated outdoor lap pool, & were even brought fresh hot tea by the...

The view is exceptional as it is directly located on the lake. The location is good as it is walking distance from the centre (about 25 minutes walk) but you can also catch a bus which stops 4 minutes away. There is also a ferry stop (Tavernola) which is 2 minutes walking distance and it is really convenient if you wish to visit other villages on the lake. This stop is for the slow ferry only but it is a great choice if you are on holiday and want to cruise up the lake. The lounge bar in the hotel is also great if you want to just relax in the evening.

Como is surprisingly touristic.

Como is surprisingly touristic. This is an Italian city, with nothing really special apart from the lake; however, the best places to swim are quite remote from Como and with a bus (which is I think still the best option) it easily takes 1hr or so to reach some swimming area. The museum are really average. Well, I was there for work and was really surprised to see so many tourists.

Beautiful Bellagio is well worth a visit.

Beautiful Bellagio is well worth a visit. Summertime has too many people and would recommend shoulder seasons to visit. The Lake is easy to get around with the many ferries and great schedules. The shops are wonderful and most of the items are made in the Bellagio/Como area, very refreshing to see and you are guaranteed quality.

A beautiful place to spend four days.

A beautiful place to spend four days. I don't recommend going in July. The hotel rooms are warm, the AC is not great and fans were not available at our hotel. The downside is the slow, rude servers at every restaurant and the food was very overrated. The private boat tour in the morning or late evening is highly recommended. Ferry lines can be overwhelmingly long so try and go early in the morning.

Lecco is a great place as a starting point for discovering Lake Como and the area around it. Milano is less than an hour drive, and even shorter by train. The train is very cheap and saves you the aggravation of finding a parking place, which can be very expensive in Milano! Not to mention the risk of entering the ZTL-area in the city centre without a proper permit (which you can't buy in advance) and getting fined for it. Lecco is less crowded than Como and cleaner. Bellano has a beautiful sandy beach, with a nice bar and restaurant next to it, and great views of the lake. Abbadia Lariana has a very nice pebble beach, which is very quiet, and much closer than Bellano. Take the cable car to the Piani d'Erna to enjoy wonderful views of Lecco and its surroundings. Plus the opportunity to have a nice walk around and meet herds of sheep, goats and mules. Just a few examples of making the best out of your stay in Lecco!

Cernobbio is a charming, small and peaceful town, located just a 20-minute drive from downtown Como. It offers direct public ferry access for scenic, slow-paced trips across Lake Como to explore famous stops like Bellagio and Varenna. The town has a fairly limited selection of places to eat out in the evening. We went to downtown to eat on our other days. Furthermore, the dock at Cernobbio only services the standard, slower public boats. If you want to take the fast express hydrofoil (Servizio Rapido) to travel further up the lake, you have to go into Como town first to catch it.

Tremezzo is a beautiful destination and I would highly recommend a visit — though I do have a couple of critiques worth sharing. I initially wanted to rent a car but came across many comments advising against driving around Lake Como. While that may be good advice for some areas, I'd have to disagree when it comes to Tremezzo. The town is surprisingly car-centric — sidewalks are narrow at best and often nonexistent. Finding parking can certainly be a hassle at times, but I think it's worth the trade-off. Tremezzo is also much quieter than the other towns on the lake, and that's reflected in its ferry port. Compared to the ports in Bellagio, Varenna, and other popular stops, Tremezzo's is severely lacking in infrastructure. There are no clear queue markings, which leads to crowding and line-cutting, and there is almost no shade. Be prepared to wait 30+ minutes standing in direct sun. None of this is meant to discourage anyone from visiting — I had a lovely time. I simply want others to be aware of what I wasn't.
