Wonderful house to recharge with really nice staff set in a quaint location, i enjoyed the rooms, garden and pool area and Richard the owner was really helpful in giving us some great local information on places to visit. Breakfast was great in a lovely outdoor space and overall a very relaxing stay. A few great restaurants nearby in particular Trattoria Osteria IL Mattareello where we had a wonderful evening. (mad drive up but worth it) Walked the local village and climbed some of the surrounding hills which feature some of the olive oil fields no doubt connected to the history of the house.

What a unique and charming hotel, the staff were very friendly and welcoming but thoroughly professional, breakfast was excellent including a clever offer of sweet or savoury (we both had savoury - delicious!). Our very well-kept room was delightful with original decor, a private terrace overlooking the beautiful lake and an amazing double spa bath tucked away under the bed - great fun and very therapeutic after the night-time drive from the Mediterranean port. The location was super too, we're only sad we missed an operatic performance at the near-by theatre during the Puccini celebrations; the tranquil and delicious surroundings made up for that to some extent. We certainly plan to rectify that disappointment in the near future.

Viareggio does have style, particularly in some of the Modernist buildings. There are trains and buses to nearby towns, such as Pisa, Lucca. The main thing we did not like was that all the beaches in Viareggio were private, with payment for hire of deckchairs etc. On holiday we do not spend all day on the beach, but like to sit by the sea relaxing for periods. When we asked a couple of places whether we could hire chairs, umbrellas for a short period they said no, it was 20 euros for the day or nothing. It was pre-season and all the chairs/sunbeds etc were empty.

First time in this area, knowing only Adriatic side so far.

First time in this area, knowing only Adriatic side so far. Our conclusion was made up immediately ... way better than expected compared to what we know from Lignano up to Rimini. The clear water, the wide promenade, the large beach, the coastline, the nice differnt bars, the several restaurants of all kind- all is much better, more exclusive, less packed, We were there before high season but we can extrapolate and believe that the characteristic will not change during summer. We explored the sea side from Viareggio up to Vado and for us Viareggio was the best place to be. You will find all kind of hotels according to your standard, even up to 5 star luxery. Worth to try ...

We found the town to be a bit dead through the week, almost like we had arrived early. The shops were not open or didn't appear to be. Mind you they are mostly high end designer shops like Prada and Dior, not my thing at all. However at the weekend the town had more people around and the streets were busier. It was not the welcoming Italy we had hoped for. There are hardly any pavement cafes and casual dining for instance pizza and pasta, or coffee and cake places are hard to come by. The hospitality in the town was also poor and they do not appear to be welcoming to tourists. We read a bit about Forte while we were there and it appears this is a place for Italy's mega rich. Hence they don't need to worry too much about English tourists. We could find a couple of places for evening food but they didn't serve until 7.30. We could not recommend the town but the hotel we stayed in was absolutely lovely. The Olympia hotel which offered an amazing breakfast served until midday and they also had a restaurant which served lovely food but not until 7.30. I gather this is an Italian thing, however Florence, Rome and Venice all had places you could eat all through the day which is what we had hoped for in Forte.

Torre del Lago Puccini is truly a unique and special place, full of atmosphere and charm. It is here that one of the greatest opera composers, Giacomo Puccini, lived and created his masterpieces. Today, you can visit the museum in his former villa, where he composed his operas – an unforgettable experience that we highly recommend to all lovers of art and music. The town itself enchants with its beauty – located by a picturesque lake, with a beautifully designed open-air theatre dedicated to opera. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the people are kind and friendly, and everywhere you go you can feel the authentic Italian spirit. On top of that, the food is absolutely delicious – especially the pizza, which is a must-try.We have already had the pleasure of attending two breathtaking opera performances here, and we are already planning our third visit. Torre del Lago Puccini is a place that draws you back again and again – we sincerely recommend it to everyone who loves opera, Italian hospitality, and the beauty of this country.

Seems like the place is stuck in the 80s but with 2024 prices. Imposible to find decent food for less than 50 euro a person. service level on the (expensive) beaches stuck somewhere in 1986.
