Grate experience in Nikko if you are looking for a bit of a remote area. Beautiful and quiet environment. The Onsen in the hotel is amazing, especially the private one! It was nice to be able to park almost directly in front of your room. The interior design of the rooms are unique and beautiful. The room is supplied with water, drip coffee and tea, and lots of towels. Having a private onsen was very convenient and the view from the onsen was beautiful. It was also nice to have a bathtub inside. The reception building has a microwave and oven, and a small play area with some toys and books for kids. There are some DVDs to borrow (in Japanese). There is delicious rice bread for sale and it can be brought directly to your room. The manager was very kind and accommodating. I would like to come back in the future.

Hotel Iroha was exactly what I was looking for- ryokan traditional tatami beds, onsen facilities, good WiFi, clean rooms/restroom, and on the bus routes to all of Nikko’s iconic waterfalls/nature sights. The owners/hosts were the kindest lady/gentleman pair- and so helpful with check-in, directions, and onsen usage. Can’t recommend enough for a local stay in Nikko.

This was one of my very best stays in Japan. Reaching the place is easy, as the bus stops right next to it (Nikko pass is essential for this purpose, since the bus trip would otherwise cost a fortune!). The place is secluded, especially in winter. If you're after tranquility and mountains, this is the place. The resort restaurant serves its own breakfast and dinner - quite expensive, but this is a four-star hotel, and the quality of the food (and the service) is superb. For cheaper options, one may need to take the bus to the next bigger places. This property has two onsen pools: one indoor and one outdoor, both great. In the evening, there’s fire in the lounge fireplace, adding a very rustic feeling to the whole thing. We certainly enjoyed it. Overall, this is not a cheap place at all, but the quality was outstanding, and we loved every moment of the stay (except the morning we had to leave).

Our stay at Itamuro Onsen was truly exceptional. Words can hardly capture how special this place is. Surrounded by exquisite nature, beautifully curated furniture and ceramics, a sophisticated art library, and gardens designed by renowned artist Kishio Suga, it was a memorable experience. The onsens were perfect for the relaxation you need after spending some days in a busy city like Tokyo. A special thanks to Koki, who kindly showed us around Suga's museum and shared insights about the special project that is Itamuro. We're already looking forward to returning soon!

A solid and unexpectedly wonderful Ryokan hotel. The staff were completely on point and everything looks immaculately clean, modern, and well-kept. I was really blown away by the size of the room, probably the biggest I’ve seen in all of Japan! The Obachan who makes the onigiri is an absolute delight. The way she interacted with the young children was just so sweet and heartfelt! Ingredients listings on all the foods was also super helpful to avoid activating my shellfish allergy. Also - buffet carts?! Genius!

The dinner was a surprise! It was a buffet style shabu, with many choices to put in the pot. There were many other prepared foods too. The breakfast buffet provided both Japanese and American choices of food. Everyone should be able to find enough choices to be satisfied. The room was cozy and clean, and I loved waking up to the peaceful view of the river.

We stayed near Lake Chuzenji, which was nearer to some of the spots that we wanted to go to, namely Keigon Falls and Ryuzu Falls. Very nice small town vibe, which also means that everything there opens rather late, and most of them closes pretty early. Was there during the middle of November, and unfortunately the trees there were already transitioning into winter, so the lovely colors of autumn leaves were mostly gone when we were there. It would have looked even more splendid in its full autumn glory, I bet. Also spent a bit of time at the Nikko town, visiting the Nikko Toshogu temple and enjoyed some of the local delicacies. The age yuba manjyuu near the Tobu-Nikko station is to die for. Loved the place.

Nasu is well known and loved by Japanese people.

Nasu is well known and loved by Japanese people. The Emperor has a summer house here as it tends to be cooler in summer. It’s little known by westerners and therefore is not catered to westerners. Parts of Nasu are very beautiful and other parts are set up for families - eg the zoo and the Dairy farm. There are some lovely restaurants and places to visit here but you really need a car to do it.

The best thing about Nasushiobara is the hot springs.

The best thing about Nasushiobara is the hot springs. It has the Shiobara hot spring village, which has a rich spring quality and has been loved by royalty and literary masters. You can enjoy the traditional hot springs surrounded by nature in spite of the easy access from Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen, which is just an hour away from Tokyo. Each hot spring in the city is different in scale and taste, but it is an adult resort where you can spend your luxurious time by soaking in the hot spring to your heart’s content.

This quiet gem is worth the trip! It’s a one hour bus ride on a very clean bus to arrive from the airport to a train station connection. There is so much rich history here, beautiful things to see and wonderful food to discover! Home to the oldest school and strongest shogun clan. Samurai parade in February if you can handle the cold. 10/10 come visit Ashikaga!

i saw most of the historical places in town, but no time to enjoy the scenic areas, waterfalls, hiking, etc. a bit rushed. i was glad to find the art museum at Toshogu (not the main museum). Toshogu was wall to wall students & tourists. at the main museum, one could review all of the architecture, history is some peace & quiet, but the art museum was practically empty. more staff than tourists. there were lovely paintings, and ceramic ware to admire. the garden view was beautiful. i felt like i was in my own private museum. with only one day, i was satisfied with the sights i managed to see, following a reddit suggestion to take the bus to the grandson's shrine and walk downhill, but wish i had the time to pace myself to enjoy how scenic the area is.

The Nasu Kaido is a famous and really scenic road that goes from the lowlands of Nasu town all the way up to the Nasu mountains, and it's beautiful to drive up - if you have a car. The road is a two lane highway that (in Summer) is very busy and not intended for bicycle or pedestrian use when you get to the uphill portions of the road, so be sure to use a vehicle or public transportation if you want to go further up it. The public transportation options are present - you can take the Shinkansen to NasuShiobara Station, then take the bus to the Nasu Mountain Ropeway, then take the ropeway to the near top of one of the mountain peaks and hike from there. It's a good venture, though if you try it on the weekend, be sure to check when the last buses operate, or else you might have to take a taxi.
