We are so happy we chose this property for our stay in Katharagama. For the past 9 years, we stayed at the same hotel every year, but this time we decided to move to a new place — and I honestly think it was a great decision. The hotel is newly built, with a lovely, well-maintained garden. The atmosphere was extremely calm and peaceful — perhaps because it's still new and there weren't many guests — but that made our stay even more relaxing and enjoyable. The rooms are huge and very spacious. The bathroom was also very clean and well-kept. A special highlight was the Chinese restaurant. The food was really, really good — tasty, flavorful, and I believe truly authentic Chinese dishes. We truly loved our stay and are already planning to come back next year. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

We’re really glad we chose the Mailagama Cinnamon Residence for our stay in Kataragama. The staff treated us with great respect and warm hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed the hoppers dinner with its absolutely delicious curries. We must also mention that the curd and honey were the best we’ve ever had.

The rock carvings at buduruwagala are truly special.

The rock carvings at buduruwagala are truly special. For me one of the highlights of the trip and definitely a hidden gem. Off the beaten track. Tranquil and beautiful you can really feel the energy here. We stayed with a family surrounded by nature. On the 2nd day we hired a scooter and drove into the mountains to visit Diyaluma Falls. Absolutely stunning and breathtaking and another highlight.

Off the beaten path and immersed in nature, a great place to escape the crowded Sri Lanka cities. It's very easy to stop here when you are coming from the mountains or the beach because it's precisely in the middle. The temperature year round is very pleasant and not as hot as the beach or as cold as the mountains. Locals are happy to see you and you won't get harassed by salespeople. It's a small town which offers a great market, lots of fruits and even a few restaurants with local prices everywhere. Go into the village and find accomodations nearby the national park border to really see a lot of wildlife. The place is known to have elephants, monkeys, frogs, peacocks, giant squirrels, and so many beautiful birds. We stayed just one day but I think at least 2 days would be better if you enjoy a peaceful retreat feel nearby nature with little distraction. This town is much more pleasant to walk around then Tissamaharama and has a relaxed atmosphere. Stop by and get a different experience in Tanamalwila.

Nice place surrounded by beautiful paddy filled, adjacent river was another level experience since it was a perfect place to chill out after incredible tour of elephants and birds watching. We got easy access to one of the Yala gates. Thank for the Sri Lankan authentic breakfast, even host didn't charge for that. All good, highly recommended

It is a holy place visited by Buddhists and Hindus alike. Some Muslims also visit a mosque located in the sacred area. Buddhist usually visit the Kiri Vehera area first and then come to the Devale premises. There are circular roads to facilitate that sequence. Otherwise, one can walk to the Devale premises and then proceed to the Kiri Vehera premises. There are lot of boutiques selling various items including offerings for Devale. They are located in the town area. After that one has to cross a small bridge over the Menik River to enter the sacred area. Over the years both sides of the river have been re-organized for a better sequential experience.

We went for leopard safari & it is in zones 5&6. Safari was excellent & saw one leopard & a bear! Hotels generally not near any restaurants so confined to your hotel for dining. Would not want more than one or two nights there.

Buttala is a beautiful little city close to the northern part of Yala National Park. If you pass by (maybe on your way to/from the east coast), stop here and enjoy a couple of nights in the local homestays (we can fully recommend Yala Avian Eye Safari!!). Safaris from here are calm and you can enjoy the northern part without hundreds of other jeeps.

Kataragama itself is a temple town and that’s pretty much it. Other than that it’s a jumping off point for safari in yala and kumana. One day is more than enough for cultural/religious aspects. The Perahara (pageant) in July is fantastic. Be warned that it may not start till midnight and may need pre booked tickets. Also watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas around this time. The country side and the rural life as well as the wildlife is fantastic and authentic. Quite hot and sunny year round but dec to feb is more comfortable.
