Get Back to Glorious Nature
One of 5 islands protecting the north of the Netherlands, practically car-free Vlieland is a family-friendly place to get away from it all. Wonderful sand dunes stretch along its whole north coast, culminating in the Vliehors sand mass where seals can sometimes be spotted.
Tourists are not allowed to bring cars onto the island, so the only forms of transport are bus or the quintessentially Dutch bicycle. The small size of the island also makes it popular for walking, and birdwatchers flock here to admire the wide range of feathered friends that make Vlieland their home.
Due to the island’s rural nature, it only has 1 village - Oost-Vlieland. This is the arrival point for ferries from Harlingen on the Dutch mainland and from the neighbouring island of Texel. Water taxis also depart to Terschelling island in the opposite direction.
Oost-Vlieland has a coastline on both the Waddenzee and the North Sea and the 2 areas are separated by one of the island’s woods. Since this is the only inhabited area, naturally it is here that you find most of the restaurants, shops and Vlieland accommodation.
