The hotel exceeded our expectations as did the excellent service provided by the staff, especially the Boston girl.(can't remember her name) Hotel was immaculately clean, the food was top notch in both the bar and the restaurant and the bed was very comfortable. Everything the place is spectacular, the attention to detail was unbelievable. Phillipa who welcomed us at the hotel was amazing. She was very welcoming and attentive with a lovely demeanour and always offering to help in any way. The hotel and its staff are all pet loving and we felt very comfortable in the hotel with our dog. The food at the restaurant was extremely good and the staff were very welcoming towards our dog. We will definitely be returning. Overall an unforgettable great experience.

FAQs about hotels in Serra do Gerês

Mountain Landscapes and Majestic Lakes

A beautiful region of mountain streams, granite peaks and tranquil lakes, the Peneda-Gerês National Park (or Serra do Gerês) is a haven for hiking and wildlife watching. Portugal’s first, and so far only, national park is located north-east of Braga and west of Chaves, just across the Spanish border from Galicia.

Several hills within the park have ancient dolmens and megalithic structures, and it is still a traditional area where many locals make their living off the land.

The town with the most Peneda-Gerês National Park hotels on Booking.com is Gerês, home to one of the country’s most famous thermal baths. Spanning a valley, this popular town is on the Gerês River which gushes along a rocky bed on its way down to Vilar da Veiga, a town snaking down a hillside towards serene Caniçada Lake below.

Formed by the Caniçada Dam downstream, this cross-shaped lake offers river beaches, boat trips and various watersports. Also on a dammed lake are Outeiro and Venda Nova on the southern outskirts of the Serra do Gerês.

Montalegre to the north-east has red-roofed houses climbing towards a hill topped with a small castle, while Terras de Bouro to the west of the park is surrounded by greenery and offers yet more accommodation near the Peneda-Gerês National Park.

People are very nice and helpful. We arrived in the middle of the night (around 03:45) due to flight trouble and they left us instructions for pick-up of keys. We really appreciated the offered solutions. Thanks Ernani. Our luggage arrived 2 days later and they received them on our absence. Perfect! There are around 10 or 12 small bungalows, arranged internally like apartments, with terraces and outrageous views over the valley. There are modern kitchen equipment, with induction hearth, stove, dish washer and also some pans. If you are a cook you will miss some pans and additional equipment like mixers, but for usual cooking it is sufficient. There is a heated internal pool, very nice as we stayed 5 days in autumn and had a lot of rain, wind and low temperatures. Head caps are required and can be bought on reception for 4 € each. We had our breakfast included. During the days where there were enough guests, rich and varied options were available. As people got reduced, they asked us at night before to choose food from a menu. No desperdice. Perfect! We didn't eat at restaurant, but it smelled very well during the initial days and they offer some nice combinations at a relatively high price level (this seems to be inherent to the region), but we are not really enabled to evaluate this point. Rooms were clean on arrival. In bathroom there is a heating device which allows hanging and drying of bath towels. Very nice as this small detail is often neglected at hotels. As the bungalows are placed on a steep hill, it is adequate more for a bit sporty people. Access by road is also steep but asphalted and reachable by standard vehicles. We are planning to return to Peneda-Gerês (under better weather conditions) and would certainly consider to stay at Pousadela again.

We loved everything about this hotel. It was located in the perfect spot, with parking and free access to the park where the pools are located. The rooms were spotless, very comfortable, and had a truly luxurious feel. We stayed for two nights but wish we could have stayed longer. The beds were super comfortable with great pillows as well. Best sleep I've had in Portugal so far. The breakfast was really great with lots of variety at the buffet. Staff were very friendly, and we enjoyed our stay very much.

It was perfect!!! Me and my wife spent a week at this place and we both loved it so much!! Everything was great inside the house, really spacious even for a family with kids I believe. It was comfortable and with a really beautiful view. We had everything we needed in all the rooms to cook, light the fire, change the beds and new supplies too (toilet paper, towels, sheets, pillow case). The hosts were soo helpful with us!!! It was a great stay, we would definitely come back!!

Pousada Mosteiro de Amares provided a truly unforgettable experience. The space, crafted with deep history and delicate design touches, offered a spatial experience unlike any other. Here are the three factors that made our stay particularly significant: 1. Architectural Harmony: The way the historic monastery has been transformed is magnificent. The balance between the ancient stone structure and modern fixtures—from the lighting to the furniture—is masterful and inspiring. 2. Serene Atmosphere & Views: The peaceful environment and the breathtaking views from the property allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the history of the site. 3. Culinary Excellence: Every meal was delicious and beautifully presented, complementing the overall high-quality experience of the stay. I strongly hope to return one day. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a unique architectural journey.

Considering we stayed one month, it wasnt long enough. if you love unrestricted access to mountains, waterfalls, the fauna in northern Portugal. the genuine friendliness of the people, and the food, Gee Wizz , come and enjoy what they have on offer, an example of the local people, we were climbing a steep road at the foot of a mountain near Ermal, and passed by a man cutting brush, once he realised what we were attempting, he gave us armfulls of fruit from his house, Kiwis, Apples, and Oranges, Just smashing, what a lovely guy.
