Harrismith is an outstanding base for exploring this...
Harrismith is an outstanding base for exploring this beautiful corner of South Africa. Rather than constantly packing and unpacking as you move from place to place, you can settle in comfortably and enjoy a series of wonderful day trips to some of the Free State’s most spectacular destinations.
The town sits in a perfect location, with easy access to the magnificent Drakensberg mountains, charming Free State towns, and the breathtaking landscapes of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. One day you can be driving through Golden Gate’s dramatic sandstone cliffs and open grasslands, and the next you can be exploring the quiet rural towns that give the Free State its unique character and charm.
What I particularly appreciated was being able to return each evening to the same comfortable accommodation rather than living out of a suitcase. After a day spent enjoying mountain scenery, scenic drives, hiking trails, or discovering local cafés and shops, it was a pleasure to come back, relax, and plan the next day’s adventure.
The roads in the area are generally excellent, the scenery is stunning in every direction, and there is a wonderful sense of space and tranquillity that is becoming increasingly rare. Whether your interests are nature, photography, history, road-tripping, or simply experiencing small-town South African life, Harrismith provides an ideal and convenient base from which to explore.
For travellers who enjoy slow travel and prefer to experience a region properly rather than rush through it, Harrismith is difficult to beat.

Harrismith is a very very cold place in, winter.
Harrismith is a very very cold place in, winter.
Whilst the location and everything in the cottage was excellent, we could not enjoy the stay due to the cold and no heaters.
If it's specified that there will be no heaters in winter and no fans in summer, then either we carry our own heaters or fans, or look for, alternate accommodation.
The roads in Harrismith are terrible.

Harrismith is a lovely town to stop off in, the people are...
Harrismith is a lovely town to stop off in, the people are very friendly. We were close enough to the restaurants, accross the highway, and we had a great meal at Spur. There were plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Sadly there are plenty of potholes in the roads.
