Wow... This stay was a pleasant surprise and the perfect overnight stop between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The accommodation was spacious, spotless, and extremely comfortable. The breakfast provided was so generous and more than we could eat. It was enjoyed in the privacy of our unit. There is a braai facility for those who want to braai and outdoor seating. This outdoor area made meals even more enjoyable and intimate, we walked around the farm and had a look at the animals. This was so relaxing. Highly recommended. You must give this place a try and I promise you, that you will return.

The view of the dam from the property was amazing.

The view of the dam from the property was amazing. The room/apartment had more than what we expected. The shower was nice and strong and the heater in the room made the room nice and toasty. It was great to have DSTV at our disposal. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Phillipolis is a little out of the way .

Phillipolis is a little out of the way . The roads are quite potholed, but they are working on it. It is a really dusty and rundown little town , but there are signs of renewal. People were friendly and welcoming and new guesthouses and eating places have opened. The town is safe to explore.

It is the perfect haf-way stop on the way or from Cape Town.

It is the perfect haf-way stop on the way or from Cape Town. The views are immaculate. The place is clean and the area itself is quiet so you get the perfect layover. It could even be a trip on its own how beautiful it is

Historic buildings, architecture. Friendly people.

Historic buildings, architecture. Friendly people. Many old towns in the Free State have fallen into complete decay (eg. Winburg, Zastron) but property owners in Philippolis clearly love their properties. Even though it's a way off the N1 the detour on the R717 is no longer than the main road ... you just have to drive carefully to avoid potholes. Going slower is good as you pass through stunning Free State Karoo landscapes.

We were very pleased to see that the Gariep Dam wall area...

We were very pleased to see that the Gariep Dam wall area was open to the public to experience the beautiful overflow of water up close. A few days earlier we visited Vanderkloof Dam, where although one gate on each side of the dam was open, the large stop signs and rules displayed on the gates made us hesitate to enter, as it was unclear whether visitors were actually permitted to access the dam wall area. The contact number displayed on the gate also went unanswered and there was no official person available to confirm whether visitors may enter to take photos, videos, and experience the overflow from nearby rather than only from a distance. In contrast, Gariep Dam felt far more welcoming and inviting to visitors. There was good parking available, public toilets, and even built-in braai areas for day visitors. Although we did not make use of the toilets ourselves, the overall setup encouraged people to stop, explore, and appreciate the beauty of the dam and surrounding area. One thing we would have appreciated is more detailed information about tours inside the dam wall itself — for example where and how to book, how long the tours take, on which days they are available, and at what times. Apart from that, Gariep Dam definitely offered a much more enjoyable and visitor-friendly experience for us.

Oldest establishment in the Free State.

Oldest establishment in the Free State. All activities/facilities are within walking distance from the centre of town. The Philippolis Hotel is definitely a stop for a traveller wanting to see how a building can be restored. Definitely check out the woodwork. The bar serves ice-cold beverages, even in load-shedding. Pitstop restaurant offers great meal options at reasonable prices. I can recommend the Lamb. The main access road to Philippolis has a few potholes, but the town residents continually repair the road to ensure good access. The roads in the town are in a reasonable state. Good option as a stopover en route to Gauteng from Cape Town
