We booked 5onWessels on the way to the coast, and it turned out to be the perfect halfway point between Johannesburg and our destination in the Eastern Cape. The accommodation is authentic and full of character, set in an historical farmhouse with high ceilings, wooden floors and a welcoming stoep overlooking roses and the hillside.
Inside, the space is clean, tasteful, and old-worldly, with thoughtful touches like a beautiful mohair blanket on the bed and original artwork. After a long journey, the hot shower was a gift, and the bed was so comfortable we found ourselves checking the label to see how we could get one for our own home.
Our host, Gert, was hospitable and kind, embodying the warmth of the town itself. Smithfield is clean and carries a sense of pride.
A restorative stopover. Highly recommended for anyone travelling through and seeking both comfort and authenticity.

Black Cottage was one of my favorite road trip stopovers of all time. Dee Dee is a wonderful host, a great cook, and a creator of the most beautiful spaces. From the garden to the art to the food, everything at Black Cottage is a feast for the senses. I want to come back for two or three nights to fully enjoy all Black Cottage has to offer.
With mountain views, Letsatsi Game Lodge is situated in Smithfield and has a restaurant, a shared lounge, bar, garden, year-round outdoor pool and terrace.

I spent a night on my way from the Eastern Cape to Johannesburg. Annejie was a wonderful host. The place is out of the way, in wonderful bush and has wonderful views of the hills. I had an excellent braai and a very restful sleep. Everything had been thought of, including rusks and coffee beans and a grinder. Would love to come back and spend a week here. Very peaceful

As we only stayed for one night, we did not experience...
As we only stayed for one night, we did not experience everything the town has to offer.
However, what we loved, was the safety, being able to walk the dogs on the streets after dark.
We ate out at Buckley's, which was superb, food and atmosphere were wonderful.
Our host at Purple house was attentive, making sure of our safety on the trip, and our awareness of what to expect beforehand. We loved the house and decor, and the ease with which our dogs were welcomed. Our accommodation was more than adequate and very comfortable.

Our host was friendly, however the condition of the cottage was concerning. During a storm, the roof leaked onto the bed, which was unsafe and forced us to change sleeping arrangements. There was mold on the decor, the bathtub was inconsistent, the stove did not function correctly, and the windows let in cold drafts. These issues significantly affected our comfort and did not align with the reviews.
