The owner was all alone and not available more than a few hours a day (11-1). Having a fee for after hours requests seems a bit too much. Thankfully I didn’t need any help but it did mess with some of my plans that I had to wait around in the midday to meet the owner.

This place was so relaxed and feels like a garden retreat! My room was exceptionally clean and the upgrade to a twin room was much appreciated. I met the nicest people here and it’s no doubt because the owner puts a lot of effort into making a quality hostel.

Would have liked a coathanger, and something to put things on, the only piece of furniture in the room was a 30x40 cm table next to the bed. I think I had paid over the odds on this only so I know I could have got better elsewhere for less, however this was extremely well placed.

The kitchen was lovely ans spacious, conducive to having conversations with other people. Nice place to go read a book if desired. People were nice & there were no rowdy tentents.

We were looking forward to using the hot tub, but only read the statement on the website about it not being available because of covid once we got there. Can sort of understand having restrictions on reception because of covid, but it did mean that because we were only staying one night, we couldn't ask any questions, make use of facilities or get any information. Not many people are going to be at the hostel for check in between 11am and 1pm. Had thought that at least tea and coffee would be provided.

Room and communal areas were clean and tidy. Great that we were able to have a dorm room to ourselves. Instructions for self-checkin were clear and easy to follow.

Nothing everything was as you would expect from a top rated hostel.

Absolutely a great place to stay. The owners were lovely and I enjoyed the other guests there as well, the atmosphere was fantastic! The location is great, very close to the city centre and it has local shops nearby. The Old Country House had all the facilities you would expect, it's also warm and comfortable. I would recommend it to all types of guests from independent travellers to families and even for group bookings as they have 4 separate houses onsite with a variety of options to suit nearly everyone. I will definitely stay there again.

In a city with currently limited options for quality accommodation if you are wanting to stay at hostels, The Old Country House is by far the one to be at if you are looking for accommodation that ticks all the boxes for good value for money and great facilities. Many other hostels are now unfortunately seemingly poorly managed or overrun by unsavoury local guests, while The Old Country House has managed to maintain their standards throughout the trying times of reduced tourism. Recommended for solo travelers, couples or families, looking for a quiet place to relax for a few nights in a setting that feels like less of a bland modern commercial hostel and more like a warm homely environment.
